Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Thai, you can drop the subject or object if it's already clear from the conversation context.

  • If the person is known, drop the pronoun: 'กินข้าวหรือยัง' (Have [you] eaten?)
  • If the object is clear, omit it: 'ซื้อมาแล้ว' ([I] bought [it] already).
  • Use pronouns only for emphasis or when introducing a new topic.

Use Nicknames

If you need to refer to yourself, use your nickname instead of 'I'. It sounds very cute and local.

Smart Tips

Pause and ask: 'Does the listener know who I mean?' If yes, drop it.

Repeat the verb from the question instead of using a pronoun.

ฉันชอบ → ชอบ

Use the name once, then drop the pronoun for subsequent sentences.
