Passiv mit Modalverben: Dinge erledigen
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use modal passives to focus on the action's necessity or possibility without needing to mention who is performing it.
- Present/Future: Use 'Modal + be + Past Participle' (e.g., 'It must be finished').
- Past: Use 'Modal + have been + Past Participle' (e.g., 'It should have been done').
- Negative: Place 'not' after the modal (e.g., 'It cannot be changed').
Overview
We must finish the project.can, must, should, might, etc.) ist eines der elegantesten Werkzeuge der englischen Sprache. The report must be submitted by Friday. Das klingt objektiv, professionell und rückt die Deadline in den Mittelpunkt, nicht die Person, die unter Druck gesetzt wird.can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would) immer der Infinitiv ohne to (der sogenannte *bare infinitive*).The manager (Subject) must (Modal) sign (Infinitive) the contract (Object).be. The document must be read / The documents must be read. Subject + Modal Verb + be + Past Participle (V3)must | Starke Notwendigkeit | You must lock the door. | The door must be locked. |should | Ratschlag / Empfehlung | We should inform the staff. | The staff should be informed. |can | Möglichkeit / Fähigkeit | They can solve the problem. | The problem can be solved. |might | Vage Möglichkeit | Someone might steal the car. | The car might be stolen. |will | Zukunft / Versprechen | The company will launch the app. | The app will be launched. |not wird direkt hinter das Modalverb gesetzt. Oft werden hier Kontraktionen verwendet (außer in sehr formalen Texten).- Formel:
Subject + Modal Verb + not + be + Past Participle - Beispiel:
The files must not be deleted.(Die Dateien dürfen nicht gelöscht werden.) - Beispiel:
The meeting couldn't be cancelled.(Das Meeting konnte nicht abgesagt werden.)
Modal Verb + Subject + be + Past Participle? - Beispiel:
Can the deadline be extended?(Kann die Frist verlängert werden?) - Beispiel:
Should the office be cleaned today?(Sollte das Büro heute gereinigt werden?)
to brauchen, wie have to oder ought to. Hier bleibt das to erhalten:The car has to be repaired.(Das Auto muss repariert werden.)The rules ought to be followed.(Die Regeln sollten befolgt werden.)

- *Satz:*

- Wenn du sagst
The task must not be done, bedeutet das im Englischen: „Die Aufgabe darf nicht gemacht werden“ (Verbot).

Direkt, handlungsorientiert. |The software is updated. | Reine Zustandsbeschreibung oder regelmäßige Handlung. |The software should be updated. | Fokus auf der Notwendigkeit/Empfehlung. Höflicher, professioneller. |The software should get updated. | Eher umgangssprachlich. „Get“ ersetzt hier „be“.
- Englisch (steif):
One must be careful here. - Englisch (natürlich/Passiv):
Caution must be exercised here.
Modal + have been + V3.The bridge should have been built years ago. Hier kombinierst du das Modalverb mit dem Perfect Passive.must, should, can, could, will und might am häufigsten. May wird oft in formalen Erlaubnissen genutzt (This area may be accessed by authorized personnel only). My boss must make the decision. Wenn du aber sagen willst, dass die Entscheidung generell ansteht, ist The decision must be made die bessere Wahl. Es geht immer um den Kontext!Modal Passive Formation

FAQ (8)
Yes, in informal English. For example, 'It needs to get done' instead of 'It needs to be done'. However, 'be' is much more common in writing.
'Must not be' is for rules (prohibition), while 'cannot be' is for things that are impossible.
Use the word `by` at the end. 'The law must be signed `by the President`.'
Yes, they are almost identical in meaning, but 'ought to' is slightly more formal or moralistic.
Technically yes (modal passive continuous), but it is very rare and usually replaced by simpler forms like 'might be happening'.
To sound objective. Scientists care about the experiment, not the person holding the test tube. 'The liquid must be heated' sounds more scientific than 'I must heat the liquid'.
No, you are missing the word `have`. It must be 'It should `have` been done'.
When the 'doer' of the action is the most important part of the sentence or when you want to be very direct and personal.
