In Armenia, 'Bari mard' is often associated with the concept of 'Tashats kogh' (a person who carves/shapes their own character). It is a deeply respected trait that often outweighs professional success. In the Diaspora, calling someone a 'Bari mard' often implies they are a 'pillar of the community' who helps preserve Armenian culture and schools. In villages, a 'Bari mard' is someone who shares their harvest or helps with a neighbor's construction without being asked. In the capital, the phrase is increasingly used to describe social activists or those who volunteer for humanitarian causes.
