A1 Expression Informell

Duok man

Give it to me

Bedeutung

A direct request for an object.

🌍

Kultureller Hintergrund

Directness is valued. Using 'duok man' without 'prašau' (please) among close friends is not seen as rude, but as a sign of intimacy. In contrast to Lithuania, English speakers often find 'Give me' too blunt and prefer 'Could you give me...'. Direct imperatives are very rare. A Lithuanian 'duok' would be translated with much softer, humble forms in Japanese. Similar to Lithuanian, the direct imperative 'Day mne' is common and acceptable in casual settings.

🎯

The 'Prašau' Sandwich

Even though 'Duok man' is direct, adding 'prašau' at the end makes you sound much more likeable: 'Duok man vandens, prašau'.

⚠️

The 'Jūs' Rule

If you are in a bank, a post office, or a government building, never use 'Duok'. Always use 'Duokite'.
