DnD Really Is Therapy

Tabletop roleplaying games, or TTRPGs, are kind of like improv theater, but with some structured rules and an element of random chance.

Los juegos de rol de mesa, o TTRPGs, son algo así como teatro de improvisación, pero con reglas estructuradas y un elemento de azar.

It can be a lot of fun to gather around a friend’s table and tell a story together.

Puede ser muy divertido reunirse alrededor de la mesa de un amigo y contar una historia juntos.

And it can be emotionally rewarding, too.

Y también puede ser emocionalmente gratificante.

In fact, a lot of players like to joke that TTRPGs can be just as good as going to therapy.

De hecho, a muchos jugadores les gusta bromear diciendo que los TTRPGs pueden ser tan buenos como ir a terapia.

And the therapists… they noticed. Not only that, but some of them agreed and started researching how to really, actually turn tabletop games into therapy.

Y los terapeutas... lo notaron. No solo eso, sino que algunos estuvieron de acuerdo y comenzaron a investigar cómo realmente convertir los juegos de mesa en terapia.

If you’ve heard of any TTRPG, it’s  probably Dungeons and Dragons, or D&D for short, with its  elves and dwarves and goblins.

Si has oído hablar de algún TTRPG, probablemente sea Dungeons and Dragons, o D&D para abreviar, con sus elfos y enanos y goblins.

And dungeons! And dragons! But there are actually a ton,  from D&D’s cousin Pathfinder, to spooky investigation games like Monster of the Week or Call of Cthulu.

Which is apparently not how  Lovecraft pronounced it.

Which is what we learned  while researching this video.

It is objectively Cthulu. I will fight anybody who tells me otherwise.

Then there’s the really niche  stuff, like a game that asks what it would be like to be an in all-female  Soviet night-flying bomber pilot squadron in World War II  called “The Night Witches” – which was actually a thing  that happened in history – and is also a roleplaying game.

Luego está lo realmente de nicho, como un juego que pregunta cómo sería ser parte de un escuadrón de pilotos bombarderas nocturnas soviéticas, todas mujeres, en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, llamado "The Night Witches" — que en realidad sucedió en la historia — y también es un juego de rol.

They run the gamut, but what  most TTRPGs have in common is: that they are social experiences where players are communicating and cooperating.

Abarcan de todo, pero lo que la mayoría de los TTRPGs tienen en común es que son experiencias sociales donde los jugadores se comunican y cooperan.

In general, each player creates  their own custom character, and there’s some sort of narrative  story you’re all telling together.

En general, cada jugador crea su propio personaje personalizado, y hay algún tipo de historia narrativa que todos están contando juntos.

And each player actively takes  part in shaping both their character’s story and the larger  narrative through roleplaying – that is, thinking through  whatever imaginary scenario is in front of them, whether it be an  angry dragon or a spooky mansion, imagining what their  character might think or feel, making decisions about what to do next… and then facing the imaginary consequences.

Y cada jugador participa activamente en dar forma tanto a la historia de su personaje como a la narrativa más amplia a través del juego de rol — es decir, pensar en cualquier escenario imaginario que tengan frente a ellos, ya sea un dragón furioso o una mansión espeluznante, imaginar lo que su personaje podría pensar o sentir, tomar decisiones sobre qué hacer después... y luego enfrentar las consecuencias imaginarias.

Besides being fun, there are  some scientific studies that suggest that engaging in this  kind of play can be good for you.
