Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Amharic, you make a feminine noun 'the' by adding the suffix '-wa' to the end of the word.

  • Use '-wa' for feminine nouns ending in a consonant: 'set' (woman) becomes 'set-wa' (the woman).
  • If the noun ends in a vowel, the suffix often merges or drops: 'lam' (cow) becomes 'lam-wa'.
  • Only use this when referring to a specific, previously mentioned, or unique feminine noun.
Noun (Feminine) + wa = The + Noun
