Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Past Continuous for the background action and the Past Simple for the sudden interruption.
- Use 'যখন' (when) for the long, ongoing action.
- Use 'তখন' (then) to introduce the sudden, short action.
- The ongoing action uses the '-ছিলাম' suffix, while the interruption uses the simple past.

Meanings
This structure describes an ongoing action in the past that is interrupted by a specific, completed event.
Interruption
