Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Hungarian, the word immediately before the verb is the 'Focus'—it carries the most important information in the sentence.

  • The focus position is the slot directly preceding the verb: 'Én ALMÁT eszem' (I am eating an APPLE).
  • If you move a word into the focus position, you change the emphasis: 'ALMÁT eszem' vs 'Eszem az almát'.
  • Negation words and question words automatically take the focus position: 'NEM eszem' (I am NOT eating).
