To say you didn't do something politely, take the stem of the verb, add 'masen', and finish with 'deshita'.

  • Identify the polite stem (e.g., {食べる|たべる} -> {食べ|たべ}).
  • Add 'masen' to make it negative (e.g., {食べ|たべ} + masen).
  • Add 'deshita' to make it past tense (e.g., {食べ|たべ} + masen + deshita).

The polite past negative ("I didn't...") is formed by replacing ます with ませんでした. This completes the four basic polite conjugations every beginner needs: ます (present affirmative), ません (present negative), ました (past affirmative), ませんでした (past negative). Like all masu-form conjugations, this is perfectly regular.
食べます → 食べませんでした (I didn't eat). 行きます → 行きませんでした (I didn't go). します → しませんでした (I didn't do).
来ます → 来ませんでした (I didn't come). ませんでした is literally ません (negative) + でした (past of です). It may look long, but it rolls off the tongue naturally with practice.
This form is used frequently in daily conversation: 昨日勉強しませんでした (I didn't study yesterday), まだ食べませんでした (I haven't eaten yet). It is also commonly used in apologies: すみません、分かりませんでした (Sorry, I didn't understand). With these four forms, you can express any basic polite verb statement about present or past, positive or negative.
