The suffix -shou (~症) is commonly used in Japanese to denote medical conditions, disorders, or syndromes. It is affixed to a noun or a verb stem to form a new noun representing the condition. Think of it as the English '-syndrome' or '-disorder.' For example, combining 不眠 (fumin, sleeplessness) with -症 creates 不眠症 (fuminshou, insomnia). Another common usage is combining it with a specific disease name, such as 糖尿病 (tounyoubyou, diabetes) to form 糖尿病症 (tounyoubyoushou), although often just 糖尿病 is sufficient. It's often seen in official or medical contexts.
A common mistake is trying to use -shou with conditions that aren't typically medical disorders or syndromes. For instance, you wouldn't use it for a temporary cold (風邪, kaze) or a headache (頭痛, zutsuu) unless you're specifically referring to a chronic or severe disorder related to those symptoms. Another error is incorrectly applying it to non-medical conditions or emotional states. For example, while 'depression' is 鬱病 (utsubyou), which includes -病 (byou, disease), you wouldn't say 悲しい症 (kanashii shou) for 'sadness syndrome.' Always remember its medical or disorder-related connotation.
