Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Slovak verbs come in pairs: Imperfective (process) and Perfective (result).

  • Use Imperfective for ongoing or repeated actions: 'Čítal som knihu' (I was reading a book).
  • Use Perfective for completed or single actions: 'Prečítal som knihu' (I finished reading the book).
  • Perfective verbs cannot be used in the present tense to describe current actions.

Verbal aspect defines whether an action is viewed as an ongoing process or a completed, bounded event.
