Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Slovenian, short words called 'clitics' (like 'me', 'ti', 'ga') must always sit in the second position of the sentence.

  • Clitics cannot start a sentence: 'Ga vidim' (I see him) is correct, 'Vidim ga' is also possible but 'Ga' cannot be first.
  • The first position can be a single word or a whole phrase: 'Danes ga vidim' (Today I see him).
  • If you have multiple clitics, they follow a strict hierarchy: 'Mi ga je dal' (He gave it to me).
First Element + [CLITIC] + Rest of Sentence
