熟练

You usually place it after a verb or use it as an adjective. You can say someone does something very 熟练. It often pairs with the word 地 to describe an action. For example, 他熟练地开车 means he drives skillfully. You can also use 很 or 非常 to show how skilled someone is. It’s a great way to compliment a colleague or a friend’s hobby.

Use it when you see someone who is clearly a pro at what they do. It’s perfect for workplace reviews or describing technical skills. Use it at a restaurant if the waiter balances five plates perfectly. Use it when talking about language skills too. If your Chinese flows naturally, people will say your speaking is 熟练. It’s a high-tier compliment for anyone putting in the work.

Don't use it for innate talent or personality traits. You wouldn't call a 'kind' person 熟练. It’s only for things you can practice. Avoid using it for 'simple' things that don't require skill. Saying you are 熟练 at sleeping sounds like a weird joke. Also, don't confuse it with 舒服 which means comfortable. Being skilled doesn't always mean you're relaxed!

The first character 熟 literally means 'cooked' or 'ripe.' In Chinese culture, knowledge is often compared to food. Just as raw meat must be cooked to be edible, a skill must be 'cooked' through practice to be useful. It reflects the Confucian value of hard work and repetition. If you aren't 'ripe' yet, you're still 'green' or raw.

You will often hear 老练, which means 'experienced' but usually refers to social wisdom. There is also 手生, which is the exact opposite. 手生 means your hands have become 'raw' or rusty because you haven't practiced. If you stop practicing Chinese for a month, you might tell your teacher your skills are 手生 now. It’s a humble way to admit you need a refresher.
