Behold the flip-flop. You've probably
personally purchased about a billion of
these. Uh if you're watching this video
on a modern uh cell phone, around 200
million, another 200 million probably in
your personal computer. Uh 50 million at
least on a modern car uh spiraling up
into the hundreds of millions if you
have a fancy electric one. Another 50
million for your TV set. Um multiply
that by all the previous versions you
bought. Multiply it by all the ones you
bought for a family. And uh yeah, uh
it's not inconceivable the average
viewer. this uh video has purchased at
least a billion flip-flops. To sort down
what this thing called the flip-flop is,
uh let's uh take a look at this
particular part. Reverse engineer. This
is the 4013. Uh this is actually a
fairly old part from 1980s. Uh it is a
good example, however, of a CMOS
flip-flop. All new, all silicon these
days is CMOS. And quite frankly, design
lessons that are shown in this
particular device uh will be carried
forward from the the 1980s all the way
up to the modern gadgets you have in
your hand. Uh it is two flip-flops this
package. Uh so uh it's going to be very
easy to actually take this under a
microscope and uh take a look at the
individual transistors uh which make up
a flip-flop. So this video is in two
parts. This is this just schematic
symbol for a flip-flop. I have an
introduction if you'd like to be
refreshed as to what a D flip-flop is.
Um it's so-called named D flip-flop
because that's the uh data input there.
And the second half of the video, we'll
do a silicon level analysis. So if you
know what a D flip-flop is, you can skip
the first half of the video and uh look
at all the juicy details of a diaphoto
and the transistors that it contains. Uh
