When I was a kid, I used to love

00:08

watching the Olympics on TV. The

00:11

athletes were like superheroes to me,

00:13

powerful and determined and fearless. I

00:16

assumed that they were all just brimming

00:18

with self-confidence and that once you

00:20

got to that level, all of your doubt

00:22

just disappeared.

00:24

Now, I was just a kid who loved the

00:26

sport of curling, and becoming an

00:28

Olympian seemed like an impossible

00:30

dream. But that didn't stop me from

00:32

trying.

00:34

I was always driven by setting and

00:36

achieving big goals. And I used to think

00:37

that if I just achieved my goals, then

00:40

I'd finally feel like I was enough. That

00:43

if I just became an Olympian, that if I

00:45

just won a gold medal, then that

00:47

negative voice inside my head would be

00:49

silenced and I'd be happy and fulfilled

00:51

and complete.

00:53

Well, after years of training and

00:55

against the odds, it actually happened.

00:57

I became an Olympian. But it was in that

01:00

moment that I realized something I never

01:02

expected.

01:04

That your inner critic doesn't vanish.

01:06

And maybe it even gets louder. The

01:09

stakes are higher and the expectations

01:12

are greater. And that little voice we

01:14

all have inside that whispers, "You're

01:16

not good enough." It doesn't go away.

01:20

Have you ever told yourself that you'd

01:22

finally be happy once you reached the

01:23

next milestone? Once you got the

01:26

promotion or you bought the dream house

01:28

or you hit that personal best you were

01:30

chasing.

01:32

The thing is, even when we achieve our

01:34

goals, that joyful feeling we're

01:36

searching for doesn't always come. Or if

01:38

it does, it can be fleeting.

01:41

A few moments of happiness and a little

01:43

celebration, but then we move the

01:45

goalposts and we're back to chasing

01:47

again.

01:49

I know this because I lived it.

01:53

At the 2018 Olympics, my team was ranked

01:55

number one in the world. We were

01:57

expected to win a medal, but instead we

02:00

missed the playoffs.

02:02

I'll never forget the headline the next

02:04

day in the Globe and Mail. It said,

02:06

"Canada's Olympic women's curling team

02:08

will be remembered for one thing,

02:11

dropping the curling ball."

02:14

It was devastating. And that headline

02:17

validated everything my inner critic had

02:19

been saying that you had a chance and

02:22

you blew it and you're a failure and now

02:24

everybody knows it. And even when my

02:27

team did win big events, that critical

02:31

voice never really went away. I remember

02:34

standing on top of the world

02:35

championship podium. I had a gold medal
