Agreement of Ordinal Numbers

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Ordinal numbers in Croatian act like adjectives: they must match the noun's gender, number, and case, and always take a dot.

  • Always add a dot after the digit (e.g., 1. means 'prvi').
  • They decline exactly like definite adjectives (prvi, prva, prvo).
  • Agreement is mandatory for gender, number, and case (na drugom katu).
Number + . = Adjective (Gender ♂/♀/⚧ + Case 📋 + Number 1/2)

The Dot is King

In Croatian, a number without a dot is a cardinal (1, 2, 3). A number with a dot is an ordinal (1., 2., 3.). Never skip it in writing!
⚠️

Compound Numbers

Only the last word declines. Don't say 'stotog pedesetog prvog'. Say 'sto pedeset prvog'.
🎯

Adjective Shortcut

If you already know how to decline the adjective 'novi' (new), you already know how to decline all ordinal numbers!
💬

Roman Numerals

Croatians often use Roman numerals (I., II., III.) for centuries or kings. They still require a dot!

Smart Tips

Always put a dot after the day and the month if using digits.

15 10 2023 15. 10. 2023.

Remember that 'prizemlje' is the ground floor (0.), so the '1. kat' is actually the second level.

Živim na jedan kat. Živim na prvom katu.

Don't panic! Just look at the very last digit (3.) and decline that one.

tisuću petsto četrdeset tri katu tisuću petsto četrdeset trećem katu

Check if it means 'second' or 'other' by looking for a sequence.

Imam drugi problem. (Could be 2nd or just another) Ovo je moj drugi problem danas. (Clearly 2nd in a sequence)

Prononciation

Mémorise-le

Moyen mnémotechnique

Ordinal numbers are 'Orderly Adjectives'—they always need a dot and a matching outfit (gender/case) for their noun.

Association visuelle

Imagine a number wearing a small hat (the dot) and holding hands with a noun. If the noun changes its dress (gender), the number must change its suit to match.

Rhyme

If it's first, second, or third in line, add a dot and it'll be fine!

Story

A runner finishes a race. He is '1.' (prvi). He stands on the '1. kat' (first floor) of the podium. His 'prva nagrada' (first prize - feminine) is a gold medal. He checks the date: '1. lipnja'. Everything is first, everything has a dot.

Défi

Look around your room and name 5 objects in order using ordinals (e.g., 'prva stolica', 'druga knjiga'). Write them down with digits and dots.

Notes culturelles

Croatians use the 24-hour clock, but ordinals are rarely used for hours (unlike 'first hour'). They are strictly for dates, floors, and rankings.

The use of the dot after digits (1., 2.) is a shared Austro-Hungarian heritage found in Croatia, Austria, and Germany.

In Croatian universities, 'godina' (year) is always used with an ordinal to indicate which year of study a student is in.

Derived from Proto-Slavic ordinal forms, which were already adjectival in nature.

FAQ (8)

The dot distinguishes an ordinal number (1. = first) from a cardinal number (1 = one). It's a mandatory rule in Croatian orthography.

Yes! They decline like adjectives, so they have plural forms (e.g., 'prvi dani' - the first days).

You use the Genitive case: 'prvog siječnja'.

Usually, but it can also mean 'other' or 'another' depending on the sentence.

They are treated exactly like digits and also require a dot (e.g., XVIII. stoljeće).

No, in compound numbers, only the last part ('prvi') declines.

Both are Genitive masculine. 'Prvoga' is the 'long form' often used for emphasis or in formal writing.

You say 'prvi put'. In this phrase, 'put' is masculine, so 'prvi' is in the Accusative (which looks like Nominative here).
