bilmoq
When you're just starting out in Uzbek, understanding basic verbs like "bilmoq" is super important. At the A1 level, you're learning to talk about yourself and very simple concepts.
"Bilmoq" means "to know," and you'll use it all the time to say things like "I know" or "Do you know?" Mastering this verb early helps you build simple sentences and have basic conversations.
Focus on its present tense conjugations first, as those are the most common for beginners. It's a foundational word for communicating information and understanding others.
When you're learning Uzbek at an A2 level, you'll start using bilmoq in more varied ways. You'll learn how to conjugate it for different tenses like past, present, and future, and for different people (I know, you know, he/she knows, etc.). You'll also begin to see how it's used with different grammatical structures, like when you know how to do something. This verb is super common, so mastering its various forms and uses will really boost your ability to communicate in Uzbek.
§ Don't confuse 'bilmoq' with 'tanishmoq'
Many English speakers learning Uzbek try to use 'bilmoq' for knowing people. In English, we say, 'I know John.' In Uzbek, for knowing a person, you use 'tanishmoq' (to be acquainted with/to know a person) or 'taniyma?' (do you know him/her?).
- DEFINITION
- To know (a fact, information, skill).
Men bu javobni bilaman.
I know this answer.
Siz uni taniysizmi?
Do you know him/her? (Are you acquainted with him/her?)
§ Correct verb conjugation
'Bilmoq' is a regular verb, but make sure you are using the correct endings for different tenses and persons. A common mistake is to mix up the endings or use an infinitive form when a conjugated form is needed.
- Men bilaman (I know)
- Sen bilasan (You know - singular informal)
- U biladi (He/She/It knows)
- Biz bilamiz (We know)
- Siz bilasiz (You know - singular formal/plural)
- Ular biladilar (They know)
Men suzishni bilaman.
I know how to swim.
§ Using 'bilmayman' for 'I don't know'
The negative form is quite straightforward, but new learners sometimes forget the '-may' part. Remember to insert '-may' before the personal ending to make the verb negative.
Men javobni bilmayman.
I don't know the answer.
U ingliz tilini bilmaydi.
He/She doesn't know English.
§ Saying 'I know' to confirm understanding
In English, we often say 'I know' as a quick way to confirm understanding. While 'bilaman' literally means 'I know', it can sometimes sound a bit blunt in Uzbek if used alone in response to someone explaining something. Often, 'Ha, tushundim' (Yes, I understood) or simply 'Ha' (Yes) is more natural and polite.
— Bu juda muhim. — Ha, tushundim.
— This is very important. — Yes, I understood.
§ Using 'bilmoq' with infinitives for 'know how to'
In Uzbek, to express 'know how to do something', you attach the dative case ending (-ga/-ka/-qa) to the infinitive form of the action verb, and then use 'bilmoq'. Many learners forget the dative ending.
Men ovqat pishirishni bilaman.
I know how to cook (literally: I know to cooking).
U gitara chalishni biladi.
He/She knows how to play the guitar.
How Formal Is It?
"Men bu ma'lumotni bilmoqchiman. (I want to know this information.)"
"Men uni bilaman. (I know him/her.)"
"Sen uni bilasanmi? (Do you know him/her?)"
"Bu nima ekanligini bilasanmi? (Do you know what this is?)"
"Men uni biliyman. (I know him/her. - colloquial/slang)"
