इन आम संज्ञाओं के अनोखे बहुवचन रूप सीखो; ये सिर्फ «-s» नहीं जोड़ते!

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Most English nouns add '-s' to become plural, but 'Rule Breakers' change their spelling entirely without adding an 's'.

  • Vowel changes: 'man' becomes 'men' and 'foot' becomes 'feet'.
  • Special endings: 'child' becomes 'children' and 'ox' becomes 'oxen'.
  • No change: some words like 'sheep' and 'fish' stay exactly the same.
👤 (Man) ➔ 👥 (Men) | 🦶 (Foot) ➔ 👣 (Feet)

Overview

Kya tumne kabhi sheeps ya childs bolne ki koshish ki hai aur laga ki kuch... gadbad hai? Tum akele nahi ho!
English thoda sa rebel hai. Zyadatar nouns bas plural banne ke liye ek s jod lete hain. Ek cat, do cats.
Aasaan hai, hai na? Khair, hamesha nahi. Kuch shabd alag hona pasand karte hain.
Wo apni spelling poori tarah badal lete hain. Ya kabhi-kabhi, wo bilkul nahi badalte! Inhein irregular plurals kaha jata hai.
Inhein English grammar ke special guests samjho. Ye party ke aam niyam follow nahi karte. Agar tumne kabhi moose vs mice ke baare mein koi meme dekha hai, toh tumne is rule ko action mein dekha hai.
Inhein seekhna tumhe ek pro jaisa dikhata hai. Ye tumhe un awkward texting mistakes se bachne mein madad karta hai jo auto-correct aksar miss kar deta hai. Saath hi, inmein se kuch shabd wo hain jo tum sabse zyada use karte ho!
Tum apni family, apne friends, ya apne pets ke baare mein inke bina baat nahi kar sakte. Lekin chinta mat karo. Ye lakhon nahi hain.
Zyadatar kuch chupe hue patterns follow karte hain. Ek baar tumne pattern pakad liya, toh samajh lo kaam ho gaya! Ye English speakers ka secret handshake seekhne jaisa hai.
English ne hamare saath aisa kyun kiya? Zyadatar itihaas ki wajah se. English kayi purani bhashaon ka mix hai.
Kuch shabdon ne apne purane school wale plural forms ko hazaar saal se banaye rakha hai. Ye aisa hai jaise tumhara favorite app sirf vibes ke liye koi purana icon rakh le. Hum un sabse common shabdon ko dekhne wale hain jinhe tumhe rozana ki zindagi mein zaroorat padegi.
Rebels se milne ke liye taiyaar ho?

How This Grammar Works

English ki duniya mein, plural ka matlab hai ek se zyada. Aamtaur par, ye -s ya -es wala rule hota hai. Tum shayad pehle se hi dogs, boxes, aur cities jaante ho. Lekin irregular plurals ek curveball fenkte hain.
Bas end mein ek -s lagane ke bajaye, shabd khud badal jata hai. Kabhi-kabhi ye beech mein ek chhota sa badlaav hota hai. Doosri baar, ye poora naya ending hota hai.
Aur kabhi-kabhi, shabd bilkul waisa hi rehta hai! Imagine karo tumhare paas ek fish hai. Agar tumhare paas das hain, toh bhi wo bas fish hi hain.
Aisa lagta hai jaise unke paas plurals ke liye ek built-in invisibility cloak hai. Ye maayne kyun rakhta hai? Kyunki agar tum mans bologe, toh log tumhe samajh jayenge, lekin ye thoda aisa lagega jaise koi chhota bacha bol raha ho.
Zoom call par ya WhatsApp group mein natural lagne ke liye, tumhe sahi form ki zaroorat hai. Ise kisi khaas mauke ke liye kapde pehenne jaisa samjho. Tum job interview mein pajamas pehen kar nahi jaoge!
Persons ke bajaye people use karna grammar ka business casual hai. Ye bas fit baithta hai. Inmein se zyadatar shabd bahut purane hain.
Ye basic cheezon ko represent karte hain: body ke parts, family members, aur aam janwar. Kyunki hum in shabdon ko itna zyada use karte hain, humne inhein naye -s rule mein fit karne ke liye badalne ki zehmat nahi uthayi. Ye English language ke vintage pieces hain.
Ye shayad ajeeb dikh sakte hain, lekin ye classic hain. Tum paoge ki jaise-jaise tum practice karoge, ye sahi lagne lagenge aur -s wale versions galat lagne lagenge. Tab tum samajh jaoge ki tum jeet rahe ho!

Formation Pattern

1
Zyadatar irregular plurals kuch saaf groups mein aate hain. Tumhe andaza lagane ki zaroorat nahi hai! Yahan bataya gaya hai ki ye aamtaur par kaise kaam karte hain:
2
The Vowel Switch: Ye shabd alag sound karne ke liye apne beech ke vowels ko badal dete hain.
3
manmen (a ban jata hai e)
4
womanwomen (o wahi rehta hai, lekin a ban jata hai e—pronunciation bhi badal jata hai!)
5
footfeet (oo ban jata hai ee)
6
toothteeth (Ek aur oo se ee ki chalaang)
7
goosegeese (Kya koi pattern samajh aa raha hai?)
8
mousemice (Poora middle shift ho jata hai!)
9
The -en Ending: Ye plurals banane ka ek bahut old-school tareeka hai. Sirf kuch hi shabd abhi bhi aisa karte hain.
10
childchildren (Dhyan do ki child ka sound kaise badalta hai!)
11
oxoxen (Bahut common nahi hai jab tak ki tum koi farm simulator game na khel rahe ho!)
12
The Copy-Paste Group: Ye shabd singular aur plural mein ek jaise hote hain. Ye sabse aasaan hain lekin pehchanne mein sabse mushkil bhi.
13
sheepsheep (Kabhi bhi sheeps nahi!)
14
fishfish (Aamtaur par. Tum alag-alag prajatiyon ke liye fishes sun sakte ho, lekin abhi ke liye fish par tike raho!)
15
deerdeer (Tez aur pakadne mein mushkil, bilkul is rule ki tarah!)
16
The «-f» to -ves Shift: Agar koi shabd f ya fe par khatam hota hai, toh wo aksar ves mein badal jata hai.
17
leafleaves (Patjhad ke pedon ke baare mein socho!)
18
knifeknives (Kitchen mein dhyan se!)
19
lifelives (Jaise video game mein!)
20
The Special Case: personpeople. Ye wo hai jo tum har ek din use karoge. Jabki persons technically kanooni dastavezon mein maujood hai, people wo hai jo asli insaan actually bolte hain.
21
Memory Trick:
Feet, Teeth, aur Geese
ke baare mein socho. In sabke plural mein double e hai! Ye irregulars ki EE-Team hai.

When To Use It

Tum inka use tab karte ho jab tum kisi cheez ke ek se zyada hone ki baat kar rahe ho. Ye simple lagta hai, lekin context hi sab kuch hai!
  • Social Media: Jab tum apne squad ki photo post karte ho, tum kehte ho
The people in this photo are amazing.
    Kabhi bhi
    The persons
    nahi.
  • Online Shopping: Agar tum naye socks khareed rahe ho, toh site tumhare feet size ke baare mein pooch sakti hai.
  • Gaming: Agar tum RPG khel rahe ho, toh tum mice ke group se lad sakte ho ya maidan mein sheep ka jhund dekh sakte ho.
  • Texting: "I'm taking the children to the park.
Ye kuch formal family group chats mein
the kids" se kahin zyada natural lagta hai, lekin childs se toh bahut behtar hai.
  • Travel: Agar tum farm par apni trip ka vlog bana rahe ho, toh tum bahut saare sheep aur deer dekhoge.
  • Health: Agar tum dentist ke paas jaate ho, toh wo tumhare teeth check karte hain, tumhare tooths nahi.
Inka sahi istemaal karna dikhata hai ki tum detail par dhyan dete ho. Ye kisi popular gaane ke lyrics jaanne jaisa hai. Baaki sab ajeeb shabdon ko jaante hain, aur ab tum bhi jaante ho!
Ye tumhari English ko smooth aur native-like feel deta hai. Bhale hi tumhari vocabulary chhoti ho, inka sahi use karna ek bada first impression banata hai. Ye ek tourist ki tarah sound karne aur ek local ki tarah sound karne ke beech ka fark hai.

Common Mistakes

Agar tumse galti ho jaye toh bura mat manna! Yahan tak ki native speakers bhi kabhi-kabhi inke baare mein mazaak karte hain.
  • Mistake 1: Har cheez mein -s jodna. Childs, mans, foots. Ye sabse aam galti hai. Yaad rakho, ye shabd -s rule ke liye kuch zyada hi cool hain.
  • Mistake 2: Double plurals. Peoples ya childrens. Chunki shabd pehle se hi plural hai, s jodna topi ke upar topi pehanne jaisa hai. Tumhe iski zaroorat nahi hai! (Apvaad: peoples ka matlab alag-alag ethnic groups ho sakta hai, lekin A1 ke liye tumhe iski zaroorat nahi padegi).
  • Mistake 3: Women ka pronunciation. Hum ise woman ki tarah e ke saath spell karte hain, lekin hum ise WIM-min ki tarah bolte hain. Ye ek classic English trap hai!
  • Mistake 4: Fishs use karna. Bas fish bolo. Jab tak tum marine biologist nahi ho aur das alag-alag tarah ki tropical fish ke baare mein baat nahi kar rahe ho, bas ise simple rakho.
  • Mistake 5: Mouses. Agar ye janwar hai, toh ye mice hai. Agar ye tumhare computer wali cheez hai, toh kuch log actually mouses kehte hain, lekin mice abhi bhi zyada safe hai!
Joke: Sheep kabhi gum kyun nahi hote? Kyunki jab wo jaane ki koshish karte hain toh wo sab sheep-ish (sharmile) dikhte hain! (Thik hai, wo bura tha, main ruk jata hoon).

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Inhein regular shabdon ke bagal mein dekhna madadgar hota hai taaki tum fark pehchan sako.
  • Regular: catcats. Irregular: mousemice.
  • Regular: phonephones. Irregular: manmen.
  • Regular: bookbooks. Irregular: childchildren.
Notice kiya ki kaise regular shabd bas end mein ek s uga lete hain? Wo same dikhte hain, bas thode lambe. Irregulars actually apna shape badal lete hain. Ye bas ek nayi accessory lene ke bajaye Pokemon ke evolve hone jaisa hai.
Saath hi, inhein un shabdon ke saath confuse mat karna jo hamesha s par khatam hote hain. News ya physics jaise shabd plural dikhte hain lekin actually singular hote hain. The news is good (are good nahi).
Irregulars iske ulte hain: wo plural nahi dikhte (koi s nahi), lekin wo plural *hote* hain. The people are happy (is happy nahi).
Ek aur cheez: Person vs People.
  • Person = 1 individual.
  • People = 2 ya usse zyada individuals.
Kuch learners sabke liye person use karne ki koshish karte hain.
There are five person.
Nahi! People use karo. Ye group word hai.

💡

सुनो और दोहराओ

ध्यान से सुनो कि मूल भाषी इन शब्दों का इस्तेमाल कैसे करते हैं। 'children' या 'feet' को बार-बार सुनने से तुम्हारा दिमाग इन्हें आसानी से याद कर लेगा। ज़ोर से दोहराने की कोशिश करो!
Pay close attention to how native speakers use these words.
⚠️

'-s' मत लगाओ!

यह सबसे बड़ी गलती है! 'childs', 'mans', 'foots' या 'peoples' जैसे शब्द गलत हैं। इन शब्दों ने '-s' का नियम बहुत पहले तोड़ दिया था, तो इसे वापस लगाने की कोशिश मत करो!
This is the #1 mistake! Words like childs, mans, foots, or peoples are incorrect.

Create flashcards with the singular on one side (man) and the plural on the other (men).
🌍

'People' बनाम 'Persons'

हालांकि 'persons' बहुत औपचारिक या कानूनी अंग्रेजी में तकनीकी रूप से सही है, लेकिन रोज़मर्रा की बातचीत में लगभग हर कोई 'people' का इस्तेमाल करता है। स्वाभाविक और दोस्ताना लगने के लिए 'people' का ही इस्तेमाल करो! "While 'persons' is technically correct in very formal or legal English, almost everyone uses people in daily conversation."

Smart Tips

Check if it's 'foot' or 'tooth'. These are the most common body parts that don't use 's'.

My foots are tired. My feet are tired.

Always use 'are', never 'is'.

The people is waiting. The people are waiting.

Remember that 'sheep', 'fish', and 'deer' are the 'No-Change Trio'.

I saw three deers. I saw three deer.

If it's not on the 'Top 10' list (man, woman, child, foot, tooth, mouse, sheep, fish, person, goose), it's probably regular.

The mouses are in the box. The mice are in the box.

उच्चारण

Woman vs. Women

The first 'o' in 'woman' sounds like 'u' in 'put'. In 'women', the 'o' sounds like 'i' in 'sit'.

Using 'persons' instead of 'people' makes you sound like a police officer or a lawyer. 'People' is much friendlier.

In some UK dialects, you might hear 'me feet' instead of 'my feet', but the plural 'feet' remains the same.

Scientists use 'fishes' to talk about different species, but a fisherman would always say 'I caught ten fish'.

English is a mix of languages. 'Man' is an old Germanic word that uses an ancient plural system. 'Pan' is newer and follows the modern 's' rule.

Yes, but only if you are talking about different species of fish (e.g., 'The fishes of the Pacific Ocean'). For eating or counting, use `fish`.

It is plural. You must use `are` or `were`. 'The people are happy.'

The standard plural is `people`. You can use `persons` in very formal or legal writing, but it sounds strange in conversation.

Both `mice` and `mouses` are accepted for technology, but `mice` is more common.

Focus on the sound. 'Woman' (singular) sounds like 'man' at the end. 'Women' (plural) sounds like 'WIM-min'.

The only other common one is `oxen`. Words like `brethren` exist but are very old-fashioned.

In Old English, some nouns didn't have a plural ending. Sheep is one of the few that stayed that way for over 1,000 years!
