Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Phrasal verbs combine a verb with a particle (like 'up' or 'out') to create a brand new meaning.
- The meaning is often idiomatic: 'give up' doesn't mean 'give' something upwards.
- Separable verbs allow objects in the middle: 'Turn the light off' or 'Turn off the light'.
- Pronouns MUST go in the middle: 'Turn it off', never 'Turn off it'.
Overview
Get up: Uthna (bed se).Get along: Kisi ke saath achhe sambandh hona.Get over: Kisi sadme ya bimari se ubhar jana.
Turn on the light / Turn it on |Look after the baby (Never Look the baby after) |Look forward to the trip |turn the light on ya turn on the light). Lekin, agar object ek 'pronoun' hai (it, him, her), toh use HAMESHA verb aur particle ke beech mein hi aana hoga (turn it on, not turn on it).- 1Doston ke saath baat karte hue:
Let's hang out at the cafe(Socialize karne ke bajaye). - 2Office mein colleague se baat karte hue:
I need to look into this report(Investigate karne ke bajaye). - 3Rozmarra ki baaton mein:
Please take off your shoes(Remove karne ke bajaye).
- 1Literal Translation: Hindi speakers aksar 'run into' ko 'bhag kar andar jana' samajh lete hain. Jabki iska matlab 'achanak milna' hota hai. Yeh L1 interference hai kyunki hum Hindi mein 'run' (bhagna) ka literal arth nikalne ke aadi hain.
- 2Pronoun Placement Error: Hindi mein hum object ko kahin bhi rakh sakte hain, isliye learners aksar kehte hain 'I picked up it'. Yeh galat hai. Rule hai:
I picked it up. - 3Over-formality: Formal writing (jaise exam essay ya official report) mein phrasal verbs avoid karne chahiye. Wahan 'postpone' behtar hai, 'put off' nahi. Hindi speakers aksar formal context mein bhi 'break down' ya 'get over' jaise informal words use kar dete hain, jo galat impression deta hai.
He gave up (Har maan li) | He gave the book up (Upar diya) |- 1Kya main har jagah phrasal verbs use kar sakta hoon?
- 1Mujhe kaise pata chalega ki koi phrasal verb separable hai ya nahi?
- 1Kya phrasal verbs ko ratna padega?

Smart Tips
Always put the pronoun in the middle. It's the safest bet for separable verbs.
Replace 'continue', 'cancel', and 'search' with 'go on', 'call off', and 'look for'.
Check if it means 'completely'. Often, 'up' just adds emphasis to finishing something.
Use 'look forward to' + -ing. It's the perfect professional closing.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल (8)
There is no simple rule. You must learn them individually. However, most phrasal verbs with 'up', 'off', and 'out' are separable.
It's better to use one-word equivalents (e.g., 'postpone' instead of 'put off') in formal essays, but they are fine in business emails.
'Look for' means to search for something lost. 'Look at' means to direct your eyes toward something.
It's an idiom! The meaning of phrasal verbs is often figurative and doesn't relate to the physical words.
Yes! Examples include 'get along with', 'look forward to', and 'run out of'. They are always inseparable.
Usually, you stress the particle: 'He grew UP in London.'
It can change the meaning entirely. 'Take off' (leave) is very different from 'Take in' (understand).
Yes, 'go on' is the more natural, spoken way to say 'continue'.
