Irregular Imperfect Forms
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Most Bulgarian verbs follow a pattern in the Imperfect, but 'съм' (to be) and 'мога' (can) are the essential exceptions you must memorize.
- The verb 'съм' (to be) uses the stem 'бя-' in the imperfect: 'бях', 'беше', 'беше'.
- The verb 'мога' (can) uses the stem 'може-' in the imperfect: 'можех', 'можеше', 'можеше'.
- Irregular verbs often retain their stem vowel changes throughout all persons in the imperfect tense.
Meanings
The imperfect tense describes ongoing or habitual actions in the past. Irregular forms deviate from the standard stem-suffix conjugation rules.

Describing a past state using 'съм'.
