Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'were' instead of 'was' for all subjects in hypothetical 'if' clauses to signal that a situation is purely imaginary.
- Use 'were' for I/He/She/It in 'if' clauses: 'If I were you...'
- It expresses situations contrary to current reality: 'If she were here now...'
- In formal English, use inversion for emphasis: 'Were I to go...'
Overview
例えば、If I were you...(もし私があなたなら)という表現です。
I | were | If I were the CEO... | 私がCEOなら(実際は違う) |You | were | If you were in Tokyo... | あなたが東京にいたら(実際はいない) |He/She/It | were | If it were sunny... | 晴れていたら(実際は雨など) |We/They | were | If they were here...
I would buy that house if I were rich.
If I were to...were to + 動詞の原形 を使います。If the company were to go bankrupt, what would happen?(万が一その会社が倒産するとしたら、どうなるだろうか?)
(Contrary to Fact):
If I lived in London, I would visit the British Museum every weekend.
(Polite Advice):
You should... If I were you, I would double-check the contract before signing.
(Wishes and Regrets):
If we had more resources, we could finish this project sooner.
(Thought Experiments):
If we increased the price by 10%, how many customers would we lose?
(Imaginary Scenarios):
If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world in a private jet.
was と were の混同If I was...
If he was more careful, he wouldn't make these mistakes. - 正解:
If he were more careful, he wouldn't make these mistakes.
(Real):
If it rains tomorrow, I will stay home.(雨が降る可能性が十分ある) - 仮定法 (Unreal):
If it rained diamonds, I would be rich.(ダイヤモンドが降ることはまずない) - 間違い:
If I have more time, I would learn French. - 修正:
If I had more time, I would learn French.(「あればいいのにな」というニュアンスなら、hadとwouldをセットにする必要があります)
will を使ってしまうIf I had...)
If I were the president, I will change the law. - 正解:
If I were the president, I would change the law. -
Present / will + 原形 | If it rains, I will go. |Past (were) / would + 原形 | If it rained, I would go. |had + 過去分詞 / would have + 過去分詞 | If it had rained, I would have gone.
If I get the job, I will move to Tokyo.(内定の可能性を感じている:直説法)If I got the job, I would move to Tokyo.(まだ応募もしていない、あるいは自信がない:仮定法)
If I was... If I were... 基本的には would(意志・推測)、could(能力)、might(可能性)の3つをマスターすれば十分です。 If I were more experienced...→Were I more experienced...
If I were... (Keep up the great effort)!2. Negative Contractions

No. In casual conversation, it's very common. However, in exams or formal writing, `If I were` is the expected form.
Because it's not a past tense; it's the subjunctive mood. The form `were` for all subjects signals that the situation is imaginary.
Yes! `Could` means 'would be able to' and `might` means 'would perhaps'. Both work perfectly with the subjunctive.
`If I was` is for things that might have actually happened. `If I were` is for things that are definitely not true.
Yes. 'I wish I were taller' is the grammatically correct form for a present regret.
It is rare in casual speech but common in formal presentations, speeches, or high-level business meetings.
Technically yes, but for other verbs, the subjunctive looks exactly like the past simple (e.g., 'If I *had* a car'). 'To be' is the only verb where it looks different.
Just add 'not' after 'were'. Example: 'If I were not so busy...' or 'If I weren't so busy...'
