اگه ممکنه

Using this phrase is easier than making a cup of Persian tea. You can stick it at the very beginning of your sentence or tuck it neatly at the end. Grammatically, it’s a standalone clause. It doesn't change based on who you are talking to. Whether you are talking to a CEO or a cat, اگه ممکنه stays the same. For example, اگه ممکنه نمک رو بدید (If possible, pass the salt). Notice how the verb بدید (give) is still in the polite plural form. The phrase works alongside your verbs to double-down on the politeness. Just don't use it to ask your cat to stop scratching the sofa; they don't care about your politeness.

This phrase sits right in the "sweet spot" of the formality spectrum. It is primarily a spoken form. In very formal writing, you would use the full version: اگر ممکن است. However, اگه ممکنه is perfectly acceptable in 90% of life. You’ll hear it in corporate Zoom meetings, read it in friendly WhatsApp messages, and use it at the grocery store. It’s informal enough for friends but respectful enough for your boss. It’s the "jeans and a nice blazer" of phrases. It works almost everywhere except in ancient poetry or high-court legal documents. If you find yourself in a high-court legal battle in Iran, you probably have bigger problems than phrase registers anyway!

Let’s look at how this looks in the wild. You’re on a flight and someone is in your seat. You could say, اگه ممکنه جابجا بشید (If possible, please move). Or maybe you’re texting a friend to see if they can pick up some Saffron on their way over: اگه ممکنه یه کم زعفرون بخر. It even works in the digital world. On Instagram, you might comment on a photographer's post: اگه ممکنه تنظیمات دوربین رو بگید (If possible, share the camera settings). It’s ubiquitous. It’s the "please" that actually means something. It shows you aren't just taking; you're asking.

Use it whenever you are asking for a favor, no matter how small. Use it when you need someone to repeat themselves because the Tehran traffic was too loud. Use it when you’re asking for a discount at the bazaar (though you’ll need more than just this phrase to win that battle!). Use it when you want to borrow something. It’s also great for "soft refusals." If someone asks you to go out and you can't, you might say, اگه ممکنه یه وقت دیگه بریم (If possible, let's go another time). It makes the "no" feel like a "not right now."

Don't use it in an emergency. If your house is on fire, don't scream, "If possible, please put out the flames!" Just yell for help. Also, avoid using it when you are in a position of clear authority where a direct order is expected and necessary for safety. If you’re a surgeon, don't say, اگه ممکنه اون تیغ رو بدید. Just take the scalpel! Overusing it with very close family members can also feel a bit weird—it might make you sound like you’re being sarcastic or overly formal. If you ask your mom اگه ممکنه for a glass of water, she might ask if you’re feeling okay.

A frequent mistake is forgetting to use the polite verb form alongside it. ✗ اگه ممکنه نمک رو بده (if possible, give [informal] the salt) sounds like a mixed signal. It’s like wearing a tuxedo with flip-flops. Always pair it with the polite verb: ✓ اگه ممکنه نمک رو بدید. Another mistake is thinking it only applies to big favors. It doesn't! It's for the small stuff too. Finally, don't confuse ممکنه (possible) with میتونی (can you). While similar, اگه ممکنه is much more humble and less about the person's ability and more about the situation's feasibility.

You’ll hear a few cousins of this phrase. اگه بشه (If it becomes/happens) is the more casual, "street" version. You’d use this with your best friend when asking to borrow their Netflix password. On the flip side, اگر مقدوره or در صورت امکان are the heavy hitters. You use these in formal emails to a university professor or a government office. They mean the same thing but add a layer of "I am a very serious person" to your request. If اگه ممکنه is a polite knock on the door, در صورت امکان is a formal letter delivered by a courier.

Is اگه ممکنه the same as "Please"? Not exactly. "Please" is لطفاً. اگه ممکنه is more like "If it's not a bother." You can actually use both together for ultimate politeness: لطفاً اگه ممکنه.... Can I use it with my boss? Absolutely. It’s the perfect phrase for making requests in a professional but friendly way. Does it sound like I'm begging? No, it sounds like you have good manners. It’s a sign of a high emotional IQ in Persian culture. Is there a shorter version? Just ممکنه؟ with a rising intonation can work as a very short "Is it possible?" when pointing at something.
