In Croatian, nouns have grammatical gender (masculine, feminine, or neuter). 'Vlak' is a masculine noun.
Dugi vlak. (A long train.)
Nouns change their endings based on their role in a sentence (declension). For example, when 'vlak' is the direct object, it might not change, but in other cases, it will.
Vidim vlak. (I see the train.) / Putujem vlakom. (I travel by train.)
Plural of 'vlak' is 'vlakovi'.
Čekam dva vlaka. (I am waiting for two trains.)
To say 'by train', you use the instrumental case, which for 'vlak' is 'vlakom'.
Idem vlakom u Split. (I am going to Split by train.)
Adjectives describing 'vlak' must agree in gender, number, and case. For example, 'brzi vlak' (fast train), where 'brzi' is masculine singular nominative.
Brzi vlak je stigao. (The fast train has arrived.)
