Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'ຕ້ອງ' (dtông) for necessity and 'ຄວນ' (khuan) for advice to express obligation in Lao.
- Use 'ຕ້ອງ' before a verb to express a strong requirement: 'ຂ້ອຍຕ້ອງໄປ' (I must go).
- Use 'ຄວນ' before a verb to give friendly advice: 'ເຈົ້າຄວນກິນ' (You should eat).
- Negate by placing 'ບໍ່' before the modal: 'ເຈົ້າບໍ່ຕ້ອງໄປ' (You don't have to go).
