Common Aspectual Prefixes

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Serbian prefixes change the 'aspect' of a verb, turning an ongoing action into a completed, one-time event.

  • Adding a prefix often makes an imperfective verb perfective: 'pisati' (to write) -> 'napisati' (to finish writing).
  • Prefixes can change the meaning entirely: 'raditi' (to work) -> 'preraditi' (to rework/process).
  • Perfective verbs with prefixes cannot be used in the present tense to describe ongoing actions.
Prefix + Verb = Completed Action (Perfective)

Meanings

Aspectual prefixes are particles attached to the beginning of verbs to shift them from imperfective (ongoing/habitual) to perfective (completed/bounded).

1

Perfectivization

Turning an ongoing process into a completed result.

“On piše pismo.”

“On napiše pismo.”

2

Inchoative

Indicating the start of an action.

“Početi raditi.”

“Zapevati pesmu.”

3

Distributive

Doing an action to many objects or over a period.

“Izlomiti grane.”

“Ispisati sve papire.”
