Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Serbian prefixes change the 'aspect' of a verb, turning an ongoing action into a completed, one-time event.
- Adding a prefix often makes an imperfective verb perfective: 'pisati' (to write) -> 'napisati' (to finish writing).
- Prefixes can change the meaning entirely: 'raditi' (to work) -> 'preraditi' (to rework/process).
- Perfective verbs with prefixes cannot be used in the present tense to describe ongoing actions.
Meanings
Aspectual prefixes are particles attached to the beginning of verbs to shift them from imperfective (ongoing/habitual) to perfective (completed/bounded).
Perfectivization
Turning an ongoing process into a completed result.
“On piše pismo.”
“On napiše pismo.”
Inchoative
Indicating the start of an action.
“Početi raditi.”
“Zapevati pesmu.”
Distributive
Doing an action to many objects or over a period.
“Izlomiti grane.”
“Ispisati sve papire.”
