00:22

Thank You. I am honored to be with you today at your commencement

00:30

from one of the finest universities in the world.

00:35

Truth be told I never graduated from college

00:41

and this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation.

00:47

Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it.

00:52

No big deal. Just three stories.

00:55

The first story is about connecting the dots.

01:01

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months,

01:03

but then stayed around as a drop-in

01:05

for another 18 months or so before I really quit.

01:09

So why did I drop out?

01:12

It started before I was born.

01:15

My biological mother was a young, unwed graduate student,

01:19

and she decided to put me up for adoption.

01:22

She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates,

01:26

so everything was all set for me to

01:28

be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.

01:31

Except that when I popped out they decided

01:34

at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.

01:37

So my parents, who were on a waiting list,

01:40

got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected

01:44

baby boy; do you want him?"

01:47

They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that

01:53

my mother had never graduated from college

01:55

and that my father had never graduated from high school.

01:59

She refused to sign the final adoption papers.

02:03

She only relented a few months later when

02:05

my parents promised that I would go to college. This was the start in my life.

02:12

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college

02:19

that was almost as expensive as Stanford,

02:22

and all of my working-class parents'

02:24

savings were being spent on my college tuition.

02:27

After six months, I couldn't see the value in it.

02:30

I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life

02:32

and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.

02:36

And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved

02:40

their entire life.

02:42

So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK.

02:46

It was pretty scary at the time,

02:49

but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

02:54

The minute I dropped out I could stop

02:56

taking the required classes that didn't interest me,

02:59

and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

03:04

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room,

03:08

so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms,

03:10

I returned coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits to buy food with,

03:14

and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday
