§ Don't Confuse 'سَهل' with Similar Words

Many Arabic learners get confused between 'سَهل' (easy) and other words that might sound similar or have related meanings. Here are a few to watch out for:

• 'بسيط' (baseet): This means 'simple' or 'basic'. While 'simple' can sometimes overlap with 'easy', 'بسيط' usually refers to something uncomplicated in nature, not necessarily how easy it is to do.

هذا سؤال بسيط.
This is a simple question.

• 'خفيف' (khafeef): This means 'light' (in weight or severity). Sometimes, something 'light' might also be 'easy', but they are not interchangeable. For example, a light meal isn't necessarily an easy meal to prepare.

كان الطعام خفيفًا.
The food was light.

§ Using 'سَهل' Incorrectly with Masculine/Feminine

Remember that 'سَهل' is an adjective, and like most Arabic adjectives, it needs to agree in gender with the noun it describes. This is a common mistake for English speakers.

Correct

الامتحان سَهل.
The exam is easy.

(For a masculine noun like 'الامتحان')

Correct

اللغة العربية سَهلة.
The Arabic language is easy.

(For a feminine noun like 'اللغة العربية')

§ Using 'سَهل' to Describe People

While in English you might say 'He is an easy person to get along with,' this direct translation doesn't work well in Arabic with 'سَهل'. 'سَهل' describes the ease of a task or concept, not the personality of a person.

Incorrect

هو رجل سَهل.
He is an easy man. (Literal, but awkward)

Correct Alternatives

Instead, you could say:

• 'هو شخص لطيف' (huwa shakhs lateef): He is a kind/nice person.

هو شخص لطيف.
He is a nice person.

• 'التعامل معه سهل' (at-ta'amul ma'ahu sahl): Dealing with him is easy. (Here, 'easy' refers to the act of dealing, not the person himself.)

التعامل معه سَهل.
Dealing with him is easy.

§ Overusing 'سَهل' in All Contexts

While 'سَهل' is very useful, avoid using it for every situation where something is 'easy' in English. Sometimes, other expressions sound more natural.

• Instead of 'It was an easy win' (كان فوزاً سهلاً - kaana fawzan sahlan), you might say 'كان فوزاً ساحقاً' (kaana fawzan saahiqan - it was an overwhelming win) if the win was very decisive.

كان فوزاً ساحقاً.
It was an overwhelming win.
