Fußball spielen

You use the verb spielen just like any other action. You conjugate it based on who is playing. Ich spiele Fußball means "I play soccer." If you are asking a friend, say Spielst du Fußball?. Remember that in German, the activity Fußball usually stays right next to the verb. If you use a modal verb like möchte (want to), the word spielen jumps to the very end. For example: Ich möchte heute Fußball spielen. It feels like a little puzzle where the action completes the picture at the end.

Use this phrase whenever you talk about hobbies. It is a fantastic icebreaker in Germany. You can use it at a party. You can use it when meeting new neighbors. It is also perfect for making plans. Do not use this phrase if you mean American football. Germans call that American Football spielen. If you just say Fußball, everyone will assume you mean soccer. Also, avoid it for table soccer (foosball). That has its own special verb: kickern. If you are just watching the game on TV, do not say you are "playing." Use Fußball schauen instead.
