Although vs. However: 무엇이 다른가요?
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'although' to join two ideas into one sentence, and 'however' to start a new sentence after a full stop.
- Although joins two clauses: 'Although it rained, we played.' (No comma after although)
- However starts a new sentence: 'It rained. However, we played.' (Always use a comma after)
- Never use 'but' in the same sentence as 'although'—it is redundant.
Overview
Although it was expensive, I bought the latest iPhone.(비쌌지만, 나는 최신 아이폰을 샀다.)- 여기서
Although it was expensive
The iPhone was expensive. However, I decided to buy it.(그 아이폰은 비쌌다. 하지만, 나는 그것을 사기로 결심했다.)- 여기서
however는 앞 문장과 뒤 문장 사이에서 논리적인 다리 역할만 할 뿐, 두 문장을 물리적으로 합치지는 않습니다.
although | however |although와 however는 문장 내 배치와 구두점(comma, period) 사용법에서 명확한 차이를 보입니다. 이 패턴을 익히는 것이 정확한 영작의 핵심입니다.although의 문장 구성 패턴- 패턴 A:
Although+ 주어 + 동사, 주어 + 동사.
Although the cafe was noisy, I finished my homework.(카페가 시끄러웠지만, 나는 숙제를 끝냈다.)
- 패턴 B: 주어 + 동사
although+ 주어 + 동사.
although를 뒤에 붙일 때는 보통 쉼표를 쓰지 않습니다.I finished my homework although the cafe was noisy.(나는 카페가 시끄러웠음에도 불구하고 숙제를 끝냈다.)
however의 문장 구성 패턴however는 위치가 매우 자유롭다는 특징이 있습니다. 하지만 어디에 위치하든 쉼표(,)와의 조합이 중요합니다.- 패턴 A: 문장 시작점
Sentence 1. However, Sentence 2.The delivery app said it would take an hour. However, the food arrived in 20 minutes.(배달 앱에는 한 시간 걸린다고 되어 있었다. 하지만, 음식은 20분 만에 왔다.)
- 패턴 B: 세미콜론 활용 (더 격식 있는 표현)
Sentence 1; however, Sentence 2.The movie received poor reviews; however, it was a huge box-office success.(그 영화는 혹평을 받았다; 하지만, 흥행에는 크게 성공했다.)
- 패턴 C: 문장 중간 또는 끝 (강조)
The exam was difficult. I passed it, however. The exam was difficult. I, however, managed to pass it.
Although the statistics class is challenging, I really like the professor's teaching style.- (통계학 수업이 힘들긴 하지만, 교수님의 수업 방식이 정말 마음에 든다.)
however를 써야 할 때: 반전의 효과를 극대화하거나 강조하고 싶을 때however는 앞 문장을 일단 마무리지은 후, «그런데 말이야!»라고 화제를 전환하는 느낌을 줍니다. 두 생각이 독립적으로 존재하기 때문에 대조의 효과가 훨씬 강렬하게 느껴집니다.- 상황 (직장 회식): 회식 장소는 좋았는데 음식이 별로였을 때
The restaurant for the team dinner had a great atmosphere. However, the food was quite disappointing.- (회식 장소 분위기는 정말 좋았다. 하지만, 음식은 꽤 실망스러웠다.)
although vs. but vs. howeverbut: 가장 캐주얼하고 구어체적인 표현입니다. 문장 중간에만 쓰입니다.although:but보다 조금 더 격식 있고, 문장 구조가 복잡해집니다.however: 가장 격식 있고 논리적인 대조를 나타낼 때 씁니다.
although 뒤에 주절을 쓰지 않는 경우 (Fragment Error)- 잘못된 예:
Although it was raining.(X) - 이유: 한국어로는 «비가 오지만.»이라고 말해도 상황상 이해가 되지만, 영어에서
although는 반드시 두 번째 절을 필요로 하는 접속사입니다. 혼자 쓰면 문장이 잘린 형태가 됩니다. - 수정:
Although it was raining, the soccer match continued.(O)
- 잘못된 예:
The project was hard, however, we finished it.(X) - 이유:
however는 부사이지 접속사가 아닙니다. 쉼표 하나만으로는 두 문장을 합칠 수 없습니다. 이는 한국인들이 가장 많이 틀리는 '콤마 스플라이스' 오류입니다. - 수정:
The project was hard. However, we finished it.(O) 또는The project was hard; however, we finished it.(O)
although와 but을 한 문장에 동시에 쓰는 경우- 잘못된 예:
Although it was cold, but I went out.(X) - 이유: 한국어로는 «비록 추웠지만, 하지만 나갔다.»라고 강조를 위해 중복 표현을 쓰기도 하지만, 영어에서는 접속사 하나만 써야 합니다.
although가 이미 대조의 의미를 담고 있으므로but은 사족입니다. - 수정:
Although it was cold, I went out.(O) 또는It was cold, but I went out.(O)
although와 however 외에도 대조를 나타내는 표현들은 많습니다. 이들의 차이점을 표로 정리해 보았습니다.Even though | 접속사 | although보다 대조의 의미가 더 강함 (강조) |Though | 접속사 | although보다 구어체적이고 가벼운 느낌 |Despite / In spite of | 전치사 | 뒤에 절(S+V)이 아닌 명사(구)가 와야 함 |Nevertheless | 접속 부사 | however보다 훨씬 격식 있고 무거운 느낌 (그럼에도 불구하고) |On the other hand | 접속 부사 | 두 가지 사실을 단순히 비교/대조할 때 사용 |Although it rained...(접속사 + 절)Despite the rain...(전치사 + 명사)It rained. However, ...(부사 + 새 문장)
though와 although는 완전히 똑같은가요?although가 조금 더 격식 있는 글쓰기에 어울리고, though는 일상 대화에서 훨씬 많이 쓰입니다. 또한 though는 문장 맨 끝에 올 수 있지만(I'm busy. I'll help you, though.), although는 문장 끝에 올 수 없습니다.however 뒤에 항상 쉼표를 찍어야 하나요?but 대신 however를 쓰면 항상 더 좋은 문장이 되나요?but이 훨씬 자연스럽습니다. 반면 보고서, 에세이, 비즈니스 이메일에서는 however를 쓰는 것이 더 전문적으로 보입니다.although를 문장 중간에 쓸 때 쉼표를 넣으면 틀리나요?Sentence Structure Comparison

격식 vs. 비격식 느낌
Although와 however는 격식 있는 상황과 비격식적인 상황 모두에서 괜찮아요. 하지만 아주 캐주얼한 영어 회화나 문자 메시지에서는 although 대신 though (또는 그냥 but)를 선호할 수 있고, however 대신 간단히 but을 써서 간결하게 표현하기도 해요. "It's cold, though.« »I'm busy, but I'll try."다르게 표현해 보세요
Despite the rain, we went out.
It rained, but we went out.
Smart Tips
Replace it with 'However,' to immediately sound more professional and academic.
Delete the 'but'. 'Although' already signals the contrast, so 'but' is redundant.
Place 'however' immediately after that word, surrounded by commas.
Remember: 'However' is a heavy word. It needs a 'wall' (full stop or semicolon) before it and a 'cushion' (comma) after it.
발음
The 'However' Pause
In spoken English, there is always a brief pause after 'however' at the start of a sentence, matching the comma in writing.
Although Stress
The stress is on the second syllable: al-THOUGH. The 'th' is voiced like in 'the'.
Contrastive Rise-Fall
Although it was RAINING (rise), we went OUT (fall).
The rising intonation on the first clause signals that the thought is not yet complete.
암기하기
기억법
Although is 'All-in-one' (one sentence). However is 'Halfway-house' (starts a new half/sentence).
시각적 연상
Imagine 'Although' as a piece of tape sticking two papers together. Imagine 'However' as a traffic sign at the start of a new road.
Rhyme
Although starts the sentence flow, However needs a stop to go.
Story
A builder wanted to build a house. Although he had no bricks, he started anyway. He worked for ten hours. However, the walls fell down because he used mud instead of cement.

챌린지
Write three sentences about your day. Use 'although' in the first, 'however' in the second, and 'but' in the third.
문화 노트
British speakers often use 'though' at the end of a sentence in casual conversation much more frequently than American speakers. 'It was raining. We went out, though.'
In Western academic writing, starting a sentence with 'But' is often discouraged. 'However' is the preferred professional alternative to maintain a formal tone.
Using 'although' at the start of a sentence is seen as a way to deliver bad news gently by acknowledging the positive side first. This is common in 'sandwich' feedback.
'Although' comes from Middle English 'al thagh', a combination of 'all' (completely) and 'though'. 'However' is a combination of 'how' and 'ever'.

자주 묻는 질문 (8)
Yes, absolutely! Just make sure to put a comma after it. It is a very common way to start a sentence in professional writing.
No. This is a common mistake. Use one or the other. 'Although it was cold, I went out' OR 'It was cold, but I went out.'
Yes, they are very similar. 'Though' is slightly more informal and can also be used at the end of a sentence, which 'although' cannot do.
'Nevertheless' is much more formal and emphatic than 'however'. It means 'despite what has just been said'.
The comma goes at the end of the clause introduced by 'although', not after the word itself. 'Although it was raining [COMMA] we stayed in.'
Only when it means 'in whatever way' (e.g., 'Do it however you like'). When used for contrast, it always needs punctuation.
Neither is 'better', but 'even though' is stronger. Use it when the contrast is very surprising.
This is called a parenthetical use. It adds a slight contrast to a specific word or idea. 'The results, however, were poor.'
