Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use this to explain how a permanent trait or current situation caused a different outcome in the past.
- Use 'If' + Past Simple for the ongoing present state: 'If I were brave...'
- Use 'would have' + Past Participle for the past result: '...I would have jumped.'
- The 'if' clause describes something that is still true now (or generally true).
Overview
would have + p.p.
If I were brave, I would have spoken up during the meeting yesterday. (I am not brave).
(I didn't speak up).
If I had been brave yesterday...
If I had a car (지금 차가 있다면), If I lived in Seoul (지금 서울에 산다면)*
(Result):
would have p.p.: ~했을 것이다 (확신에 가까운 결과)could have p.p.: ~할 수도 있었을 것이다 (능력이나 가능성)might have p.p.: ~했을지도 모른다 (약한 추측)
If + S + Simple Past | 현재 사실의 반대 (상태, 성격, 능력) |S + Modal + have + p.p. | 과거에 일어났을 법한 가상의 결과 |If I spoke better English, I would have applied for that global internship last month.
If she weren't so indecisive, she could have chosen a major much sooner.
If I were more outgoing, I would have joined the networking dinner last night.
If I knew how to code, I would have built that app myself two years ago.
If I lived closer to the office, I would have volunteered for that late-night project.
If this software were more reliable, we wouldn't have lost all the data during the update yesterday.
If I had been a doctor, I would have helped the victim yesterday. -
If I were a doctor, I would have helped the victim yesterday. -
If I would be richer, I would have invested in Bitcoin in 2010.
If I were richer, I would have invested in Bitcoin in 2010.
Past Condition -> Present Result(If I had studied harder, I would be a lawyer now.)
now, today가 있는지, 아니면yesterday, last year가 있는지를 확인하면 결과 절의 시제를 결정하기 쉽습니다.
- 1Second:
If I were smart, I would solve this problem now.(난 지금 똑똑하지 않아서 이 문제를 못 풀어.) - 2Third:
If I had been smart then, I would have solved that problem yesterday.(그때 내가 똑똑하게 굴었더라면 어제 그 문제를 풀었을 텐데.
If I were smart, I would have solved that problem yesterday.(내가 원래 똑똑한 사람이라면, 어제 그 문제 정도는 풀었을 텐데.
If I was라고 써도 되나요?If I was를 흔히 사용합니다. 특히 '반사실적 가정'임을 명확히 할 때는 were가 주는 힘이 큽니다.would have p.p. 대신 could have p.p. Structure of Mixed Conditional (Type 2 + 3)

Always use 'If I were' rather than 'If I had been'. Your personality is a state, not a one-time event.
Use this to link your skills to past achievements.
Check if the 'if' part is a general truth. If it is, don't use 'had + V3'.
Contract 'would have' to 'would've' but keep 'were' clear.

In casual conversation, yes. However, in formal writing and exams (like IELTS/TOEFL), `were` is required for the subjunctive mood.
The 3rd conditional is for a past action (`If I had studied`). This mixed conditional is for a present state (`If I were a good student`).
Yes! `Could have` means 'would have been able to'. Example: `If I were stronger, I could have lifted that.`
Very. We use it whenever we talk about how our personality or current life affects what we did in the past.
Because it mixes the `if-clause` of the 2nd conditional with the `result-clause` of the 3rd conditional.
Yes. `If I didn't have a job, I would have traveled more last year.`
No, that's a different mixed conditional. This one is specifically for `past` results.
Look at the time. If the result happened in the `past`, you need `would have`. If it's `now`, use `would`.
