과거완료 진행형 (had been -ing)

과거의 어떤 사건 이전에 '쭉' 진행되던 상황을 설명해서 과거 이야기를 풍성하게 만들어주는 마법 같은 시제! «지속», «원인», «배경»을 이야기할 때 딱이에요.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use this to describe an ongoing action that was happening right up until another specific moment in the past.

  • Use 'had been' plus the '-ing' form of the verb for all subjects. Example: 'I had been waiting.'
  • It emphasizes the duration or process of an action before a past cutoff. Example: 'She had been working for hours.'
  • Do not use this with stative verbs like 'know' or 'want'. Example: 'I had known him' (not 'had been knowing').
Subject + 🕰️ had been + 🏃‍♂️ Verb-ing

Overview

바로 여기서 Past Perfect Continuous(과거 완료 진행형)가 등장합니다.
10시간 동안 had been working(일하고 있었다)
라고 말하는 것의 차이입니다. 차이가 느껴지나요? 하나는 감정이고, 다른 하나는 대서사시입니다.
내용이 길어 보인다고 걱정하지 마세요. 느린 와이파이나 가게의 긴 줄에 대해 불평할 때 우리는 항상 이 시제를 사용합니다.

How This Grammar Works

밤새 노트북 화면을 had been staring(뚫어지게 보고 있었기) 때문입니다.

Formation Pattern

1
이 시제를 만드는 것은 3층 샌드위치를 만드는 것과 같습니다. 매번 세 개의 특정 층이 필요합니다. 여러분 자신에 대해 말하든, 강아지에 대해 말하든, 친구들에 대해 말하든 상관없습니다. 중간은 항상 똑같습니다!
2
The Subject: 동작을 하는 사람이나 사물입니다 (I, You, He, She, It, We, They).
3
The Constant Part: 항상 had been을 사용하세요. 절대 변하지 않습니다. 여러분의 가장 친한 친구입니다.
4
The Action Part: 주요 동사를 가져와서 끝에 -ing를 붙이세요 (예: working, running, scrolling).
5
공식은 다음과 같습니다: Subject + had been + [Verb + ing]
6
긍정문:
I had been waiting.
7
부정문:
I had not been waiting
(또는 hadn't).
8
의문문:
Had you been waiting?
9
보셨나요? 레고 세트 같아요. 조각들을 끼워 맞추기만 하면 됩니다. 누가 하든 상관없이 항상 had been입니다. has도, is도, was도 없습니다. 오직 had been뿐입니다. 현재 완료 버전보다 사실 더 쉽습니다. hashave 사이에서 고민할 필요가 없으니까요!

When To Use It

Had you been running(달리고 있었니)?"

Common Mistakes

전문가들도 때때로 자기 신발끈에 걸려 넘어집니다! 주의해야 할 큰 실수들은 다음과 같습니다.
  1. 1'Been' 도둑: 많은 사람들이 been이라는 단어를 잊어버립니다. I had working이라고 말하죠. 안 됩니다! 고장 난 로봇처럼 들려요. 그 간극을 메우기 위해 been이 꼭 필요합니다.
  2. 2상태 동사 실수: 어떤 동사들은 -ing를 싫어합니다. 이런 것들을 «상태 동사»라고 부릅니다. know, like, want, believe 같은 단어들이죠.
    I had been knowing him
    이라고 말할 수 없습니다. 그냥
    I had known him

Contrast With Similar Patterns

여기서부터 흥미진진해집니다. Past Continuous(«일하고 있었다»)와 어떻게 다를까요?
  • Past Continuous: 특정 순간에 집중합니다.
오후 8시에 나는 was working(일하고 있었다).
    (7:59에 시작했는지, 5:00에 시작했는지는 모릅니다).
  • Past Perfect Continuous: 어떤 순간까지 이어진 시간에 집중합니다.
오후 8시까지 나는 3시간 동안 had been working(일하고 있었다).
Past Perfect Simple(«일했었다»)은 어떨까요?
  • Past Perfect Simple: *완료*나 결과에 집중합니다.
오후 8시까지 나는 일을 had finished(마쳤었다).
  • Past Perfect Continuous: *과정*과 기간에 집중합니다.
불이 꺼졌을 때 나는 일을 had been finishing(마치려던 참이었다).
이렇게 생각해 보세요: Past Simple은 경기 점수입니다. Past Perfect Continuous는 경기 중 흘린 땀과 노력입니다.

Quick FAQ

Q

I'd been, you'd been, she'd been 같은 축약형을 사용합니다. 왓츠앱에서 훨씬 빠르죠!

Q

미래에도 쓸 수 있나요?

아니요, 이것은 엄격하게 과거만을 위한 것입니다. 미래에는 will have been을 사용합니다. 하지만 아직 여러분의 뇌에 두통을 주지는 말자고요!

Q

왜 그냥 Past Simple을 쓰지 않나요?

쓸 수 있지만, «맛»이 사라집니다. «두 시간을 기다렸다»라고 말하는 것은 사실입니다.

두 시간 동안 had been waiting(기다리고 있었다)

I had been exercising when my phone rang.
⚠️

상태 동사(Stative Verbs)는 피해요

생각, 감정, 소유 같은 상태를 나타내는 동사(예: know, love, understand)는 보통 진행형으로 쓰지 않아요. 이런 동사들은 'Past Perfect Simple'로 써주세요.
She had known him for years.
(O)
🎯

'for'와 'since'를 활용해요

기간을 나타내는 'for'(예: for two hours)나 시작 시점을 나타내는 'since'(예: since Monday)와 함께 쓰면 좋아요. 지속적인 행동의 길이를 강조해서 문장을 더 명확하게 만들 수 있어요.
I had been working for five hours.
🌍

줄임말을 써서 자연스럽게 말해요

일상 영어에서는 I'd been 이나 hadn't been 같은 줄임말이 정말 흔하게 쓰여요. 편하게 사용하면 더 유창하게 들릴 거예요! "I'd been waiting for you."
💡

'왜 그랬는지'를 설명해 봐요

Past Perfect Continuous는 과거의 어떤 상황이 '왜' 발생했는지 그 원인을 설명하는 데 아주 유용해요. 뭔가 왜 일어났는지 궁금하다면 이 시제가 답을 줄 때가 많답니다.
He was exhausted because he had been running a marathon.

Smart Tips

문화 노트

British speakers frequently use this tense to justify social lateness or explain background context in polite conversation.

In casual American speech, the Past Perfect Continuous is sometimes replaced by the Past Continuous if the 'before' relationship is clear from context.

In academic history or literature reviews, this tense is vital for establishing the 'state of the world' before a specific historical turning point.

The 'perfect' aspect comes from the Latin 'perfectum' (completed), while the 'continuous' aspect developed later in Middle English to emphasize ongoing action.

자주 묻는 질문 (8)

The Simple form (`had worked`) focuses on completion or a result. The Continuous form (`had been working`) focuses on the duration or the process itself.

Yes! They are very common. Use `for` for a period of time (for two hours) and `since` for a starting point (since 5 PM).

It is grammatically possible in the passive voice, but it sounds very awkward. It's better to say `The house was being built` or `They had been building the house`.

Because `know` is a stative verb. Stative verbs describe a state that doesn't change, so they don't have a 'continuous' aspect in English.

Put `not` between `had` and `been`. The contraction is `hadn't been`.

Use `Past Continuous` for an action that was happening *at* a specific time. Use `Past Perfect Continuous` for an action that was happening *up until* a specific time.

It is moderately common, especially when telling stories or explaining why you were in a certain state (tired, late, etc.).

No! That's the best part. It is always `had been` for I, you, he, she, it, we, and they.
