Whenever you see 'za' (for) followed by an action, 99% of the time it must be a verbal noun. 'Za jelo', 'za čitanje', 'za spavanje'.

The 'They' Test

If you're unsure of the stem, always conjugate to 'oni' (they) first. 'Oni piju' -> 'pijući'. It never fails!

자주 하는 실수

The subject of the participle clause must match the main clause subject. Avoid switching subjects mid-sentence.

Wrong: Čitajući knjigu, on je zaspao.
정답: Čitajući knjigu, zaspao sam.

Infinitives cannot be the main verb of a clause; they need a modal or auxiliary verb.

Wrong: On je raditi.
정답: On voli raditi.

Again, the subject of the participle must be the same as the main verb. The store didn't buy the bread!

Wrong: Kupivši kruh, dućan je bio zatvoren.
정답: Kupivši kruh, otišao sam kući.

자주 묻는 질문 (6)

Yes, but it's less common. A perfective verbal noun like otvorenje refers to a single event (the opening ceremony), while otvaranje refers to the process of opening.
Pjevanje is the singular nominative. Pjevanja is either the singular genitive or the plural nominative. Usually, we use the singular.
No. Use the standard present tense radim for 'I am working'. The -ći form is only for secondary actions.
You cannot use the participle. Use dok (while). For example: Dok sam ja pjevao, ona je plesala.
You can, but it might sound a bit too formal or dramatic. Usually, people just say kad sam....
Use -vši if the verb stem ends in a vowel (e.g., kupivši). Use -avši if it ends in a consonant (e.g., rekavši).
