In traditional Russian villages, your family reputation (your 'tree') was your most important asset. If your father was known as a hard worker, you were expected to be one too. This proverb was a way for the community to enforce social standards. The USSR encouraged 'labor dynasties' (working-class families where everyone worked at the same factory). This proverb was often used in a positive, patriotic sense to celebrate these families. Today, parents often use this phrase ironically when their children show the same 'annoying' habits they have, like spending too much time on their phones or being messy. Classical writers like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky often explored the theme of 'blood' and inheritance. While they might not always use the proverb explicitly, the idea that 'the apple doesn't fall far' is central to many of their character arcs.
