Можна рахунок, будь ласка?

можна рахунок будь ласка

Can I have the bill, please?

Asking for the check in a restaurant.

🌍

문화적 배경

In Ukraine, the bill is often brought in a 'papka' (folder). It is considered polite to place your card or cash inside the folder and leave it at the edge of the table for the waiter to collect. Many modern cafes in Kyiv use QR codes on the table. You can scan the code, see your 'рахунок' on your phone, and pay via Apple Pay or Google Pay without even talking to the waiter. In Lviv, the service is often very traditional and theatrical. You might hear the waiter say 'Прошу дуже' (You are very welcome) when they bring the 'рахунок'. Politeness is highly valued here. When paying for a business lunch, it is common to ask for a 'фіскальний чек' (fiscal receipt) in addition to the 'рахунок' for accounting purposes.

💡

The Hand Gesture

If the restaurant is loud, you can catch the waiter's eye and make a 'writing in the air' gesture. This is universally understood in Ukraine as 'Можна рахунок?'.

⚠️

Don't Shout

Never shout 'Рахунок!' across the room. It is considered very rude. Always try to make eye contact first or raise a hand slightly.

Tipping in Cash

Even if you pay the bill by card, it is much better to leave the tip in cash inside the folder if possible.
