Який ваш номер телефону?

який ваш номер телефону

What is your phone number?

Asking for contact information.

🌍

문화적 배경

Ukrainians rarely use SMS. If you have someone's number, you are expected to use Telegram or Viber. Telegram is currently the most popular for all ages. Exchanging phone numbers is often preferred over LinkedIn in Ukraine. It's seen as a more direct and reliable way to get things done. Younger Ukrainians might find a direct phone call 'scary' or 'aggressive' without a prior text. Always text first! In cities like Lviv, the formal 'Ви' (and thus 'ваш') is used very strictly, even with people only slightly older than you.

🎯

The 'Viber' check

After getting a number, ask 'Ви є у Вайбері?' (Are you on Viber?). It's the most common way to start a text conversation in Ukraine.

⚠️

Don't say 'Що'

Never start this question with 'Що'. It's the most obvious sign of a beginner English-speaking learner.

Yes, in 90% of situations, 'телефону' is implied and can be dropped.

In Ukrainian grammar, most abstract or collective masculine nouns take '-у' in the genitive case. 'Телефон' follows this rule.

You can say 'Який ваш номер у Вотсапі?'

Use: 'Чи не могли б ви надати ваш контактний номер?'

Usually, people start with 'нуль' (zero). The '+38' is assumed if you are within Ukraine.

Yes, but landlines are very rare now. People will assume you mean a mobile number.

Exactly. Think of it as 'Which [of the many possible numbers] is yours?'

Informally: 'Дай свій номер'. Formally: 'Дайте ваш номер'.

You can say: 'Вибачте, я не даю свій номер незнайомцям' (I don't give my number to strangers).

It is masculine. That's why we use 'який' and 'ваш'.
