Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
To negate a past tense verb in Amharic, wrap the verb with the prefix 'al-' and the suffix '-m'.
- Add 'al-' to the start of the verb: 'al-samma' (he didn't hear).
- Add '-m' to the end of the verb: 'al-samma-m' (he didn't hear).
- If the verb ends in a vowel, the '-m' attaches directly: 'al-hed-e-m' (I didn't go).

文化メモ
In Addis Ababa, the '-m' is sometimes dropped in very fast speech, but it is considered ungrammatical in writing.
The 'al-' prefix is a common Semitic negative marker. The '-m' suffix is an emphatic marker that became grammaticalized as part of the negation.
