Recognizing Aspectual Pairs (e.g., čitati/pročitati)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Croatian verbs come in pairs: one for ongoing actions (imperfective) and one for completed results (perfective).

  • Use imperfective for habits or ongoing actions: 'Čitam knjigu' (I am reading a book).
  • Use perfective for completed, one-time actions: 'Pročitao sam knjigu' (I finished reading the book).
  • Perfective verbs often add a prefix to the imperfective base: 'pisati' -> 'napisati'.
