Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
To state the hour in Burmese, place the number before the word 'နာရီ' (nar yi) and add 'ထိုး' (htoe) for 'o'clock'.
- Use 'Number + နာရီ' for the basic hour (e.g., ၁ နာရီ - 1 o'clock).
- Add 'ထိုးပြီ' (htoe pyi) to say 'It has struck X hour' in spoken Burmese.
- Change 'တစ်' (tit - 1) and 'နှစ်' (hnit - 2) to 'တ' (ta) and 'နှစ်' (hna) when followed by နာရီ.

The 'Htoe' Rule
Number 1 and 2
12 vs 24 Hour Clock
Smart Tips
Always add 'manet' (morning) or 'nya' (night) before the number.
Think of 'ta' and 'hna' as prefixes rather than separate words.
Use 'shi-pyi-le' instead of just 'le' to sound more conversational.
उच्चारण
Weakening
The numbers 1 (tit) and 2 (hnit) lose their glottal stop and become a neutral 'a' sound.
Declarative Time
nga nar yi HTOE pyi
Falling tone on 'pyi' indicates a finished state (it has struck).
याद करें
स्मृति सहायक
Think of 'Nar Yi' as 'Now-Yee'—Now you see the time! And 'Htoe' sounds like 'Toe'—the clock kicks the hour with its toe.
दृश्य संबंध
Imagine a giant Burmese gong being struck (htoe) by a monk every time the hour changes. The sound of the gong is the 'Nar Yi'.
Rhyme
One is 'ta', two is 'hna', tell the time to your mama!
Story
A traveler in Yangon asks 'Be hnit nar yi le?'. The tea shop owner hits a bell (htoe) and says 'Thone nar yi pyi!' (It's 3 o'clock!). The traveler realizes he is late for his 4 o'clock (lay nar yi) bus.

चैलेंज
Look at your watch or phone 5 times today. Every time you check, say the hour out loud in Burmese using the 'Num + နာရီ + ထိုးပြီ' formula.
सांस्कृतिक नोट्स
Burmese people often use 'tea time' or 'meal time' as relative markers. 4 PM is often associated with 'mohinga' or tea snacks.
Historically, time was measured in 'maung' (gong strikes). You might still hear elders refer to time this way in rural areas.
The word 'နာရီ' (nar yi) is derived from the Pali word 'nāḷikā', which referred to a tube or a measure of time based on a water clock.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल (6)
In formal writing or lists, you can omit it. But in spoken Burmese, omitting `htoe` when stating the current time sounds incomplete.
Burmese uses time-of-day words: `မနက်` (manet) for morning/AM and `ညနေ` (nyane) or `ည` (nya) for evening/night/PM.
No, `nar yi` is only for hours. Minutes use the word `မိနစ်` (mi-nit).
This is a linguistic phenomenon called 'vowel weakening' which occurs in Burmese when a number is followed by a classifier.
Add the word `ခွဲ` (khwe) after `နာရီ`. For example, `နှစ်နာရီခွဲ` (hna nar yi khwe) is 2:30.
In big cities, people understand English numbers, but using Burmese numbers is much more polite and shows better mastery.
