- 满意 (mǎnyì) is a B1-level Chinese adjective meaning 'satisfied' or 'pleased' with something that meets expectations.
- The most common grammatical structure is 'Subject + 对 + Object + 满意', used for services, products, or results.
- It differs from 满足 (mǎnzú), which refers to fulfilling needs or being content, whereas 满意 is an evaluation.
- In daily life, it is frequently heard in customer service, workplace feedback, and discussions about personal choices.
The term 满意 (mǎnyì) is a foundational adjective in Mandarin Chinese used to express a state of being satisfied, pleased, or content with a particular outcome, service, or situation. It literally translates to 'filling one's intentions' or 'satisfying one's mind.' In the context of the CEFR B1 level, it moves beyond simple happiness to describe the fulfillment of specific expectations or standards. Whether you are discussing a meal at a restaurant, a performance at work, or a grade on an exam, 满意 is the go-to word for confirming that reality has met or exceeded your internal criteria.
- Core Concept
- The alignment between what was expected and what was received.
老师对我的表现很满意。 (The teacher is very satisfied with my performance.)
Understanding 满意 requires looking at its components. 满 (mǎn) means full, packed, or to reach a limit, while 意 (yì) refers to meaning, thought, or intention. Together, they evoke the image of a container (your expectations) being filled to the brim. This is why the word carries a sense of completeness. It is not just 'liking' something; it is the cognitive realization that your requirements have been fulfilled. In professional settings, this word is critical for feedback loops, service evaluations, and quality control.
- Grammatical Role
- Functions primarily as a stative verb/adjective, often preceded by degree adverbs like 很, 非常, or 十分.
你对这件衣服满意吗? (Are you satisfied with this piece of clothing?)
In a broader cultural sense, 满意 reflects the Chinese value of 'he' (harmony) and 'zhong' (middle/balance). To be satisfied is to reach a state where no further adjustment is needed. It is frequently used in social etiquette; a host will often ask guests if they are '满意' with the meal as a way of showing care and ensuring hospitality standards are met. Conversely, expressing dissatisfaction (不满意) is often done politely to maintain social face while still providing necessary feedback.
Using 满意 correctly involves mastering the '对...满意' structure. Unlike English where you say 'satisfied with,' Chinese uses the preposition '对' (towards/regarding) to link the subject to the object of satisfaction. This structure is incredibly versatile and can be used in almost any context where an evaluation is being made. For example, '我对我的工作很满意' (I am very satisfied with my job). Note that '满意' itself usually comes at the end of the clause after the degree adverb.
- Common Structure
- Subject + 对 + Object + (很/非常) + 满意
经理对这个计划非常满意。 (The manager is very satisfied with this plan.)
Another important usage is the attributive form, where 满意 modifies a noun. In this case, you use '的' (de) to connect it: '一个满意的结果' (a satisfying result) or '一个满意的笑容' (a satisfied smile). This usage is common in storytelling and formal reporting. When you want to say 'to someone's satisfaction,' you can use the phrase '令/让...满意,' such as '这个结果让他很满意' (This result made him very satisfied).
- Comparative Usage
- Use '更满意' (gèng mǎnyì) to say 'more satisfied' or '最满意' (zuì mǎnyì) for 'most satisfied.'
这是我最满意的作品。 (This is the work I am most satisfied with.)
It is also useful to distinguish 满意 from its close relative 满足 (mǎnzú). While 满意 focuses on the feeling of approval or meeting expectations, 满足 often refers to the fulfillment of physical needs, desires, or requirements (e.g., 满足需求 - to satisfy a demand). If you are 'satisfied' with a service, use 满意. If your basic needs are 'met,' use 满足. Mastering this distinction is a hallmark of moving from B1 to B2 proficiency.
In modern Chinese society, you will encounter 满意 most frequently in the service industry. From the moment you finish a call with a bank representative to the time you check out of a hotel, you will likely be asked: '您对我们的服务满意吗?' (Are you satisfied with our service?). It is the standard metric for performance in the corporate world. In apps like Meituan or Taobao, the '满意' button is often represented by five stars, and leaving a '满意' review is a crucial part of the digital economy.
- Service Context
- Used in surveys, feedback forms, and customer support interactions.
如果您对服务满意,请给我们五星好评。 (If you are satisfied with the service, please give us a five-star rating.)
In the workplace, 满意 is a key term during performance reviews. A boss might say, '公司对你今年的表现非常满意' (The company is very satisfied with your performance this year). Conversely, an employee might express their '不满意' regarding salary or working conditions. It is a word that carries weight in negotiations and professional relationships, signaling whether expectations are being aligned or if adjustments are necessary.
- Academic Context
- Teachers use it to provide feedback on student assignments or exam results.
父母对他的考试成绩并不满意。 (His parents are not satisfied with his exam results.)
Finally, you will hear it in the context of personal relationships and life choices. When someone finds a '满意' partner or a '满意' house, it implies they have found something that fits their ideal criteria. In Chinese dating shows or literature, finding a '满意的对象' (a satisfying partner) is a common theme. It suggests a match that meets the expectations of both the individual and often their family, reflecting the deep-seated cultural importance of social and personal fulfillment.
One of the most frequent errors for English speakers is using '满意' as a direct verb without the preposition '对'. In English, we say 'I satisfy the requirements,' but in Chinese, you cannot say '我满意要求.' Instead, you must say '我对要求很满意' (I am satisfied with the requirements) or use the verb '满足' (mǎnzú) to mean 'to fulfill/satisfy' the requirements: '我满足了要求.' Remembering that 满意 is primarily an adjective describing a state of mind is key.
- Mistake 1
- Incorrect: 我满意我的成绩。 (Wǒ mǎnyì wǒ de chéngjì.)
- Correct: 我对我的成绩很满意。 (Wǒ duì wǒ de chéngjì hěn mǎnyì.)
Don't forget the 对 (duì) when indicating the object of satisfaction!
Another common confusion is between 满意 (mǎnyì) and 满足 (mǎnzú). As mentioned before, 满意 is about approval and mental satisfaction, while 满足 is about fulfillment of needs or being content with what one has. For example, '满足现状' (mǎnzú xiànzhuàng) means 'to be content with the current situation,' implying you don't need more. If you say '我对现状很满意,' it means you think the current situation is good and meets your standards. The difference is subtle but important for advanced communication.
- Mistake 2
- Confusing 满意 with 满足 in the context of 'satisfying a condition.'
Use 满足 for 'to satisfy/meet' (needs, conditions, requirements).
Lastly, learners sometimes over-rely on '很满意' and forget that Chinese allows for various degrees of satisfaction. Using '挺满意的' (tǐng mǎnyì de) sounds more natural in casual speech, while '十分满意' (shífēn mǎnyì) or '极度满意' (jídù mǎnyì) adds formal emphasis. Also, avoid using '满意' to describe a person's character (e.g., 'he is a satisfied person'); instead, use it to describe their state regarding a specific thing.
To truly master 满意, you should understand how it compares to other words related to satisfaction and contentment. The most frequent comparison is with 满足 (mǎnzú), but there are others like 称心 (chènxīn), 顺心 (shùnxīn), and 中意 (zhòngyì). Each of these has a unique nuance that changes the tone of your sentence.
- 满意 vs. 满足
- 满意 is 'pleased with something' (evaluative); 满足 is 'content/fulfilled' (internal state or meeting requirements).
- 满意 vs. 称心
- 称心 (chènxīn) literally means 'according to one's heart.' It is more idiomatic and often used for things like jobs or partners (称心如意).
他找到了一个称心的工作。 (He found a job that is exactly what he wanted.)
Another interesting synonym is 中意 (zhòngyì), which is often used when choosing or 'taking a fancy' to something, like a piece of furniture or a potential spouse. While 满意 is an evaluation after the fact, 中意 is often the feeling that leads to a choice. 顺心 (shùnxīn) refers to things going smoothly and according to one's wishes, often used for life in general (生活顺心).
- 满意 vs. 舒心
- 舒心 (shūxīn) emphasizes comfort and ease of mind, whereas 满意 emphasizes the fulfillment of standards.
这里的环境让人感到很舒心。 (The environment here makes people feel comfortable and at ease.)
Understanding these synonyms allows you to be more precise. If you are reviewing a product, 满意 is best. If you are describing your dream home, 称心 or 中意 might be more expressive. If you are describing a happy, stress-free life, 顺心 is the appropriate choice. This variety is what makes Chinese a rich and descriptive language.
