Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use {关于|guānyú} for general topics and {对于|duìyú} for specific targets or relationships.
- Use {关于|guānyú} to introduce a topic: {关于|guānyú}这个计划,我们有新想法。
- Use {对于|duìyú} to show a target or attitude: {对于|duìyú}这个问题,我没意见。
- If you can replace it with 'concerning', use {关于|guānyú}; if 'towards', use {对于|duìyú}.
Overview
At the B2 level, precision in formal and written Chinese becomes paramount. Distinguishing between 关于 (guānyú) and 对于 (duìyú) is a critical step towards this precision. While both can be translated as "about," "regarding," or "concerning," they serve fundamentally different grammatical and semantic functions.
Misusing them can make your sentences feel unnatural or logically flawed to a native speaker. The core distinction lies in scope versus direction. 关于 is used to delimit the scope or subject matter of a discussion, document, or piece of media.
It draws a conceptual boundary, indicating "this is the general topic we are dealing with." Think of it as the label on a file folder; it tells you what's inside.
对于, conversely, is used to single out a specific target and direct an action, opinion, or effect towards it. It establishes a relationship between a subject and a specific object, highlighting an attitude, reaction, or consequence. It acts like an arrow pointing from an actor to a recipient.
For instance, a book can be 关于 history (关于历史的书), establishing its content. Your opinion 对于 that book (对于这本书的看法), however, targets the book and directs your viewpoint towards it. Mastering this distinction is not just about choosing the right preposition; it's about structuring your thoughts in a more authentically Chinese way, moving from the general context to the specific interaction.
How This Grammar Works
关于 and 对于 is driven by the logical structure of your sentence. Chinese, as a topic-prominent language, often prefers to establish the topic of discussion before making a comment on it. Both 关于 and 对于 are tools for introducing such topics, but they frame the topic in different ways.关于 (guānyú): Establishing a Semantic Field关于 functions as a preposition that introduces a noun phrase, establishing the domain or field of relevance for the entire clause that follows. Its primary purpose is informational and descriptive. When you use 关于, you are essentially saying, "In the realm of X..." or "Pertaining to the topic of X...".{一本关于中国经济的书} (yī běn guānyú Zhōngguó jīngjì de shū), or "a book about the Chinese economy," 关于 sets the thematic boundaries of the book. The book contains information within this scope.关于 phrases are almost always placed at the beginning of a sentence or as a modifier before a noun. Its job is to set the stage. It announces the topic before the main action or description unfolds.{关于这次的合作,我们有很多需要讨论的细节。} (Guānyú zhè cì de hézuò, wǒmen yǒu hěnduō xūyào tǎolùn de xìjié.) - "Regarding this collaboration, we have many details to discuss." The 关于 phrase establishes the topic (the collaboration), and the rest of the sentence comments on it.对于 (duìyú): Targeting an Object对于 is an evolution of the more common preposition 对 (duì), which means "to" or "towards." 对于 carries this same directional meaning but with more formality and emphasis. It isolates a specific noun (a person, object, issue, or situation) and presents it as the target of an opinion, feeling, action, or judgment. It answers the question, "Towards what specific thing is this feeling or action directed?" The predicate that follows a 对于 phrase is often a psychological verb, an adjective expressing an attitude, or a verb describing an impact.{他对于这个项目的结果感到非常满意。} (Tā duìyú zhège xiàngmù de jiéguǒ gǎndào fēicháng mǎnyì), "He is very satisfied with the result of this project," 对于 singles out "the result of the project" as the specific target of his satisfaction. This creates a clear directional link: He → satisfaction → the result. This interactive and directional nature is the key to 对于.Formation Pattern
关于 and 对于 correctly. Their syntactic roles are quite distinct.
关于 (guānyú) Patterns
关于 primarily functions in two ways: as a sentence-initial topic marker or as a pre-nominal modifier (an adjectival phrase).
关于 + Topic (Noun Phrase), Subject + Predicate. | {关于全球变暖的问题,科学家们提出了新的证据。} (Guānyú quánqiú biànnuǎn de wèntí, kēxuéjiāmen tíchūle xīn de zhèngjù.) | Regarding the issue of global warming, scientists have presented new evidence. |
关于 + Topic (Noun Phrase), [Comment without explicit subject]. | {关于明天的会议,请大家准时参加。} (Guānyú míngtiān de huìyì, qǐng dàjiā zhǔnshí cānjiā.) | About tomorrow's meeting, please attend on time. |
是 + 关于 + Topic + 的 + Noun. | {这是一本关于宋代历史的小说。} (Zhè shì yī běn guānyú Sòngdài lìshǐ de xiǎoshuō.) | This is a novel about Song Dynasty history. |
关于 + Topic + 的 + Noun. | {所有关于这个项目的报告都必须在周五前提交。} (Suǒyǒu guānyú zhège xiàngmù de bàogào dōu bìxū zài zhōuwǔ qián tíjiāo.) | All reports concerning this project must be submitted by Friday. |
关于: A 关于 phrase cannot function as the object of a verb. You cannot say *我们讨论关于... (wǒmen tǎolùn guānyú...). The verb 讨论 (tǎolùn - to discuss) takes a direct object. You must either make the topic the object (我们讨论这个问题) or front the topic using 关于 (关于这个问题,我们进行了讨论).
对于 (duìyú) Patterns
对于 is more flexible. It can appear at the beginning of a sentence to emphasize the target, or it can appear after the subject.
对于 + Target (Noun Phrase), Subject + Predicate (Opinion/Action). | {对于这项新政策,大部分员工都表示支持。} (Duìyú zhè xiàng xīn zhèngcè, dàbùfen yuángōng dōu biǎoshì zhīchí.) | Towards this new policy, most employees have expressed support. |
对于 + Target (Noun Phrase) + Predicate (Opinion/Action). | {管理层对于市场变化需要有更快的反应。} (Guǎnlǐcéng duìyú shìchǎng biànhuà xūyào yǒu gèng kuài de fǎnyìng.) | Management needs to have a faster reaction to market changes. |
对于 + Target + 来说 (lái shuō), [Statement]. | {对于一个初学者来说,这个问题太复杂了。} (Duìyú yīgè chūxuézhě lái shuō, zhège wèntí tài fùzá le.) | For a beginner, this problem is too complex. |
对于 phrase is very often a verb of opinion (支持 - support, 反对 - oppose), a psychological state (满意 - satisfied, 担心 - worried), or a description of impact/relevance (很重要 - very important, 有好处 - has benefits).
When To Use It
关于 (guānyú) in these situations:- Titles, Headings, and Subject Lines:
关于is the standard for formally announcing the topic of a document, email, or presentation. It's the equivalent of "Re:" or "Subject:". - Email Subject:
{关于第三季度财务报告的通知}(Guānyú dì-sān jìdù cáiwù bàogào de tōngzhī) - Notice Regarding the Q3 Financial Report. - Article Title:
{一篇关于人工智能伦理的深度文章}(Yī piān guānyú réngōng zhìnéng lúnlǐ de shēndù wénzhāng) - An In-depth Article on AI Ethics.
- Introducing a Topic for General Discussion: When you want to open a new topic in a meeting or conversation,
关于sets the stage for everyone. {关于客户的反馈,大家有什么想法?}(Guānyú kèhù de fǎnkuì, dàjiā yǒu shénme xiǎngfǎ?) - Regarding the client's feedback, does anyone have any thoughts?
- Defining the Content of Media or Information: When describing what a book, movie, rumor, or speech is about.
{我最近在读一本关于明代间谍的书。}(Wǒ zuìjìn zài dú yī běn guānyú Míngdài jiàndié de shū.) - I'm currently reading a book about spies in the Ming Dynasty.{听说了吗?那个关于公司重组的传闻。}(Tīngshuō le ma? Nàge guānyú gōngsī chóngzǔ de chuánwén.) - Have you heard? That rumor about the company restructuring.
对于 (duìyú) in these situations:- Expressing Opinions, Attitudes, or Judgments: This is the most common use. When you have a feeling or stance towards something specific.
{我对于他的解释完全不信服。}(Wǒ duìyú tā de jiěshì wánquán bù xìnfú.) - I am completely unconvinced by his explanation.{很多年轻人对于未来感到焦虑。}(Hěnduō niánqīngrén duìyú wèilái gǎndào jiāolǜ.) - Many young people feel anxious about the future.
- Stating an Effect, Importance, or Consequence for a Target: When you want to emphasize that something has a particular impact on a specific group or entity.
{这项决定对于公司的长远发展至关重要。}(Zhè xiàng juédìng duìyú gōngsī de chángyuǎn fāzhǎn zhìguān zhòngyào.) - This decision is crucial for the company's long-term development.{多喝水对于健康有好处。}(Duō hē shuǐ duìyú jiànkāng yǒu hǎochù.) - Drinking more water is good for one's health.
- Formal Equivalence of
对...来说(duì...lái shuō): In formal writing,对于...来说is often used to mean "from the perspective of" or "as far as X is concerned." {对于我们团队来说,这是一个前所未有的挑战。}(Duìyú wǒmen tuánduì lái shuō, zhè shì yīgè qiánsuǒwèiyǒu de tiǎozhàn.) - For our team, this is an unprecedented challenge.
Common Mistakes
- 1Using
关于to Express a Personal Opinion.
关于 establishes a neutral topic, while opinions require the directional force of 对于 or 对.- ❌ Incorrect:
{我关于你的提议非常感兴趣。}(Wǒ guānyú nǐ de tíyì fēicháng gǎn xìngqù.) - ✅ Correct:
{我对于你的提议非常感兴趣。}(Wǒ duìyú nǐ de tíyì fēicháng gǎn xìngqù.) - Why it's wrong: Interest (
感兴趣) is a psychological state directed towards a target (the proposal). It's an arrow, not a container. The sentence requires a preposition that shows this directionality.
- 1Placing
关于After a Verb like an English Preposition.
verb + about, as in "we talked about the plan." This structure is ungrammatical in Chinese.- ❌ Incorrect:
{我们昨晚讨论关于那个新项目。}(Wǒmen zuówǎn tǎolùn guānyú nàge xīn xiàngmù.) - ✅ Correct (Option A - Topic-Comment):
{关于那个新项目,我们昨晚讨论了很久。}(Guānyú nàge xīn xiàngmù, wǒmen zuówǎn tǎolùnle hěnjiǔ.) - ✅ Correct (Option B - Direct Object):
{我们昨晚讨论了那个新项目。}(Wǒmen zuówǎn tǎolùnle nàge xīn xiàngmù.) - Why it's wrong: The verb
讨论(to discuss) is transitive and requires a noun object directly after it. The关于phrase cannot serve as that object. You must either place the topic at the front of the sentence (Topic-Comment structure) or use the noun phrase alone as the direct object.
- 1Using
对于for Neutral Topic Definition.
对于 for a simple content description sounds overly emphatic and slightly strange.- ⚠️ Awkward:
{这是一本对于恐龙的书。}(Zhè shì yī běn duìyú kǒnglóng de shū.) - ✅ Correct:
{这是一本关于恐龙的书。}(Zhè shì yī běn guānyú kǒnglóng de shū.) - Why it's awkward: The sentence is simply defining the book's content. There is no opinion or action being directed at the dinosaurs.
关于correctly establishes the scope, while对于unnecessarily tries to create a directional relationship where none exists.
- 1Overusing
对于When the Simpler对(duì) is More Natural.
对于 is the formal version of 对. In spoken, everyday Chinese, 对 is far more common for expressing opinions and reactions.- Formal/Written:
{他对于这个结果表示了极大的不满。}(Tā duìyú zhège jiéguǒ biǎoshìle jídà de bùmǎn.) - He expressed great dissatisfaction towards this result. - Natural/Spoken:
{他对这个结果很不满。}(Tā duì zhège jiéguǒ hěn bùmǎn.) - He's very unhappy with this result. - Guideline: If your sentence is for a formal report, academic paper, or official speech,
对于is excellent. For a conversation with a friend or a casual email,对is usually better. When in doubt,对is often a safer and more versatile choice.
Real Conversations
Seeing these words in context helps solidify their usage. Here are examples from modern, everyday situations.
Scenario 1
> Team Lead:
> @所有人 关于明天的客户会议,资料都准备好了吗?另外,对于上次提出的A方案,客户那边有新反馈吗?
> (@all Guānyú míngtiān de kèhù huìyì, zīliào dōu zhǔnbèi hǎo le ma? Lìngwài, duìyú shàngcì tíchū de A fāng'àn, kèhù nàbiān yǒu xīn fǎnkuì ma?)
> "@all Regarding tomorrow's client meeting, are all the materials ready? Also, concerning Plan A that was proposed last time, is there any new feedback from the client?"
Analysis
关于 to set the general topic (the meeting). Then, they use 对于 to target a specific item (Plan A) and ask about a reaction (feedback) related to it.*Scenario 2
> User A Post:
> {刚看完《流浪地球3》!只说一件事:我对于“数字生命”这个设定的伦理讨论,真的非常佩服导演。}
> (Gāng kàn wán Liúlàng Dìqiú sān! Zhǐ shuō yī jiàn shì: wǒ duìyú “shùzì shēngmìng” zhège shèdìng de lúnlǐ tǎolùn, zhēnde fēicháng pèifú dǎoyǎn.)
> "Just finished watching The Wandering Earth 3! I'll just say one thing: I'm truly impressed with the director regarding the ethical discussion of the 'digital life' concept."
> User B Comment:
> {同意。另外,有没有关于电影背景设定的解析文章?好多细节没看懂。}
> (Tóngyì. Lìngwài, yǒu méiyǒu guānyú diànyǐng bèijǐng shèdìng de jiěxī wénzhāng? Hǎoduō xìjié méi kàn dǒng.)
> "Agreed. Also, are there any analytical articles about the movie's background setting? I didn't get a lot of the details."
Analysis
对于 to direct their admiration (佩服) towards a specific aspect of the film. User B uses 关于 to ask for informational content (analytical articles) that falls within a certain scope (the background setting).*Quick FAQ
关于 and 对于 ever be used interchangeably?Very rarely, and usually only in ambiguous contexts where a topic is also the target of a general, non-emotional action. For example, in {关于/对于这个问题,我们需要进一步研究} (Guānyú/Duìyú zhège wèntí, wǒmen xūyào jìnyībù yánjiū - Regarding/Towards this problem, we need to conduct further research). Here, both work because "research" can be seen as an action within the scope of the problem (关于) or an action directed at the problem (对于). However, this overlap is small. As a rule, assume they are not interchangeable. 关于 for scope, 对于 for target.
Always use 关于. It's the standard convention for titles and subjects. {关于...的通知/申请/报告} (Notice/Application/Report Regarding...) is a fixed and professional formula.
至于 (zhìyú)? How does it fit in?至于 is completely different. It's used to change the subject or introduce a new, often contrasting, aspect of a topic. It translates to "as for..." or "as to...". Use 关于 to introduce the main topic; use 至于 to pivot to a secondary one.
{这个手机的屏幕很棒,相机也很好。至于电池续航,那就一般了。}(Zhège shǒujī de píngmù hěn bàng, xiàngjī yě hěn hǎo. Zhìyú diànchí xùháng, nà jiù yībān le.) - "This phone's screen is great, and the camera is good too. As for the battery life, it's just average."
If you're expressing a personal feeling, opinion, or reaction, use 对 (duì). It's the simpler, more common version of 对于 and is almost always correct in those contexts. If you are defining what a document or report is about, use 关于. Sticking to these two core use cases will prevent most major errors.
