Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the preposition 'от' to identify who or what performed the action in a passive Bulgarian sentence.
- Use 'от' (from/by) followed by the person or thing doing the action: 'Книгата е написана от Иван'.
- The participle must agree in gender and number with the subject, not the agent: 'Тя беше поканена от тях'.
- Avoid using 'със' (with) for people; 'със' is for tools, 'от' is for the agent.
- In 'се' passive forms, agents are rarely used; stick to 'съм' + participle for agents.

Meanings
The agent in a passive sentence is the person or entity that actually performs the action, even though they are not the grammatical subject. In Bulgarian, this is almost exclusively introduced by the preposition 'от'.
Human Agent

Learners often use 'от' for tools or 'със' for people because both can translate to 'by' or 'with' in different contexts.
Both are passive, but only the 'съм' version likes to have an explicit agent with 'от'.

Check if it's a person or a tool. If it's a tool, use 'със'. If it's a person, use 'от'.
Look for a word ending in -н, -на, -но, -ни nearby. If you find one, 'от' is likely marking the agent.
Use the passive agent to sound more objective when discussing tasks or decisions.
Always use the short or long accusative forms (мен, теб, него, нея, нас, вас, тях), never the nominative (аз, ти, той).
