Using Classifiers with Numbers

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Bengali, you cannot just say 'three books'; you must use a classifier like 'ti' or 'ta' after the number.

  • Use 'ta' (টা) for general inanimate objects: 'ek-ta boi' (one book).
  • Use 'jon' (জন) for people: 'tin-jon manush' (three people).
  • Use 'ti' (টি) for a slightly more formal or specific tone: 'du-ti kolam' (two pens).
Number + Classifier + Noun (e.g., ৩ + টি + বই)

Meanings

Classifiers are particles added to numbers to categorize the noun being counted, similar to 'pieces of' or 'heads of' in English.
