🎯

The -ost Gender Rule

Whenever you see a noun ending in -ost, treat it as a feminine 'i-declension' noun. This means the genitive singular ends in -i (mladosti).
⚠️

Avoid 'Wooden Language'

Don't use too many abstract nouns in one sentence. It makes you sound like a boring bureaucrat. Mix them with active verbs.
💡

Verbal Nouns are Neuter

All nouns ending in -nje are neuter. This makes agreement easy: 'dobro učenje', 'važno pitanje'.
💬

Politeness through Abstraction

Using abstract nouns can make a request sound more polite and less direct. Instead of 'Ti si pogriješio', say 'Došlo je do pogreške'.

Smart Tips

Take the adjective that describes them and add -ost. It works 90% of the time.

On je iskren. To mi se sviđa. Sviđa mi se njegova iskrenost.

Check the adjectives around it; they must end in -a, -e, or -i to match the feminine gender.

Tvoj hrabrost je velik. Tvoja hrabrost je velika.

Use -nje for the general act and -ba for a specific instance or a more formal term.

Plovljenje je teško. Plovidba je bila duga.

Don't use 'stvar'. Use the abstract noun instead.

Dobra stvar je da smo stigli. Dobra je vijest (ili 'Dobrota situacije' - though 'vijest' is better here, 'važnost' works for 'important thing').

Perguntas frequentes (8)

Use `-ost` for qualities derived from adjectives (e.g., `ludost`). Use `-stvo` for statuses or collective groups (e.g., `majčinstvo`, `čovječanstvo`).

Yes, in standard Croatian, nouns ending in the suffix `-ost` are feminine and follow the i-declension.

Almost any imperfective verb can form a verbal noun with `-nje`. Perfective verbs rarely do, as they represent completed actions rather than processes.

`Dobrota` is the quality of being a good person (goodness), while `dobrobit` is the state of being well or prosperous (well-being).

This is due to a sound change called palatalization, where 'z' shifts to 'š' before the suffix `-stvo`.

`Ljepost` is not a standard word; `ljepota` is the only correct form for 'beauty'.

Use it in writing to sound more professional or to summarize complex ideas. In speech, use it sparingly to avoid sounding too formal.

Most do not (they are 'uncountable'), but some can. For example, `mogućnost` (possibility) can become `mogućnosti` (possibilities).
