Mixed Conditional Types
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Mixed conditionals connect a past action to a present result, or a permanent trait to a past event.
- Past to Present: Use 'Da' + Past Tense, then 'bih' + Verb. Example: 'Da sam učio, znao bih.'
- General to Past: Use 'Da' + Present Tense, then 'bio bih' + Verb. Example: 'Da sam bogat, kupio bih auto.'
- The word 'da' is essential for unreal (counterfactual) conditions in these mixed structures.
Meanings
Mixed conditionals are used to express hypothetical situations where the timeframe of the condition (the 'if' part) differs from the timeframe of the consequence.
Past Action affecting Present State
Refers to an unreal past condition and its probable result in the present.
“Da sam prihvatio taj posao, sada bih živio u Zagrebu.”
“Da nismo propustili vlak, već bismo bili kod kuće.”
Permanent Quality affecting Past Action
Refers to an ongoing or general state that influenced a specific event in the past.

Hypothetical Future affecting Past Preparation
A future event that was already influencing actions in the past (rare but used in literature).

Easily Confused
Learners often use 'ako' for unreal conditions because 'if' covers both in English.
Learners forget to use 'bio bih' for past results.
Both can mean 'if' in certain contexts, but 'kad' often implies 'whenever' or 'if and when'.

Start with 'Da sam...' followed by what you should have done, then 'sada bih...'.
Use 'Da sam' + adjective (present), then 'bio bih' + verb (past).
The particle 'bih/bi' usually wants to be the second word in the result clause.
