The Concept of Verb Roots

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Amharic verbs are built from a 3-letter 'skeleton' (root) that you wrap in vowels to change the meaning.

  • Most verbs have a 3-letter root (e.g., S-B-R for 'break').
  • Add prefixes and suffixes to the root to show who is doing the action.
  • The vowel pattern inside the root tells you the tense or mood.
Root (S-B-R) + Vowel Pattern (a-e) = Verb (ሰበረ - he broke)
