Introduction to the Renarrative Mood (Преизказно наклонение)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the Renarrative Mood to tell stories or report news you didn't witness personally—just drop the 3rd person 'is/are'!

  • Use the past active participle (l-participle) of the verb: 'чел', 'пила', 'ходили'.
  • Add the auxiliary 'съм' (to be), but ONLY for 1st and 2nd person.
  • CRITICAL: Drop 'е' (is) and 'са' (are) in the 3rd person to signal hearsay.
👤 (1st/2nd) + съм + L-Participle | 👥 (3rd) + [NO AUXILIARY] + L-Participle

Dropping them is the grammatical signal that you didn't see the event. If you keep them, you are using the Perfect Tense, which implies you are sure of the fact or see its result.

Only if you don't remember the event (e.g., 'I was a very quiet baby' -> 'Аз съм бил много тихо бебе') or if you are being sarcastic.

Yes, it is the standard mood for history books and news reports where the author wasn't a witness.

You usually use 'не бил' + participle (e.g., 'Той не бил разбрал') to add extra distance and doubt.

'Писал' is the renarrative of the Aorist (completed action), while 'пишел' is the renarrative of the Imperfect (ongoing action).

Yes! Since you didn't witness the events in the book, you use the renarrative to retell them.

Among Slavic languages, it is quite unique to Bulgarian and Macedonian, though it shares features with Turkish and Albanian.

You can use the 'Dubitative' form, which often involves adding 'бил' even in the 1st and 2nd person, or using a specific skeptical tone.
