Conditional Usage
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
The conditional mood expresses actions that would happen under certain circumstances or polite requests.
- Use the auxiliary 'aș/ai/ar/am/ați/ar' + infinitive: 'Aș mânca' (I would eat).
- The conditional is used for hypothetical scenarios: 'Dacă aș avea bani, aș călători' (If I had money, I would travel).
- Use it for polite requests: 'Ați putea să mă ajutați?' (Could you help me?).

ai. For example: ai merge (you would go).
ar. For example: ar mânca (he/she would eat).
am. For example: am spune (we would say).
ați. For example: ați face (you would do).
ar. Yes, it is the same as he/she! For example: ar veni (they would come).
a from the front of the infinitive.
fi + the past participle. Example: aș fi mers (I would have gone).
When To Use It
Aș dori o cafea. It sounds much more elegant.Aș călători în toată lumea (I would travel the whole world). Use it for advice too.Eu aș cumpăra acea mașină (I would buy that car). It is perfect for 'if' sentences. Dacă aș avea bani, aș pleca în vacanță (If I had money, I would go on vacation).Aș dori să lucrez în echipa dumneavoastră (I would like to work in your team). It is also great for asking directions politely.Ați putea să-mi spuneți unde este gara? (Could you tell me where the station is?). It softens your tone instantly. Think of it like a social lubricant for your sentences. When Not To Use It
Dă-mi sarea! (Give me the salt!) is fine for friends.că (that) when reporting a simple fact. If you are sure about something, stick to the indicative mood.Common Mistakes
ar. You might try to invent a new word for 'they'. Do not do it! Keep it simple. Another classic mistake is using the present tense instead of the infinitive. People say aș merg instead of aș merge. Remember, the helper needs the full infinitive, not a conjugated verb. It is a common 'brain fart' even for advanced learners. Some people also mix up am (we would) with the present tense am (I have). Context usually helps, but watch out for that. Also, do not forget to drop the a from the infinitive. Aș a vrea sounds like you are stuttering. Just say aș vrea. It is cleaner and faster. Yes, even native speakers mess this up when they are tired. You are in good company.Contrast With Similar Patterns
să). The subjunctive is for 'wanting someone else' to do something. Vreau să mergi (I want you to go).Aș merge (I would go). Think of the subjunctive as a bridge between two people.voi merge (I will go) is a plan.aș merge (I would go) is a dream or a 'maybe'. If you are 100% sure, use the future. If there is a 'but' or an 'if', use the conditional.Quick FAQ
Is it the same for all verbs?
Yes! Even irregular verbs use their infinitive form here.
Can I use it for 'could'?
Yes, use the verb a putea. Aș putea means 'I could'.
How do I say 'I would not'?
Just put nu in front. Nu aș merge (I would not go).
Is the past tense hard?
Not at all. Just add fi after the helper. Aș fi cântat (I would have sung).
