Number Agreement with Nouns

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Swahili, numbers must 'agree' with the noun they describe by using a specific prefix based on the noun's class.

  • Numbers 1-5 change their prefix to match the noun class: 'mtu mmoja' (one person).
  • Numbers 6-10 are generally invariant and do not change their prefix.
  • The prefix used for the number is usually the same as the noun's class prefix.
Noun Class Prefix + Number Root = Correct Agreement

Always look at the noun first. Its prefix tells you what the number's prefix should be.
⚠️

6-10 Rule

Do not add prefixes to 6-10. This is the most common error.
🎯

Listen for the Rhythm

Be Consistent

In formal settings, always use the full agreement.

Smart Tips

Identify the noun class first.
