Estonian uses three distinct vowel lengths—short, long, and overlong—which change the meaning of words entirely.
- Short vowels are quick: 'sada' (hundred).
- Long vowels are held twice as long: 'saada' (to send).
- Overlong vowels are emphasized and extra long: 'saada' (get!).
